Obituary

On Sunday, June 4, 2023, John "Sonny" Anthony Kanoski, 89, of Oklahoma City passed away. He was a loving husband, father, grandpa, granddad, papa, uncle and friend. John will be remembered for his love of family, can-do attitude, hard work, tenacity, and love of the outdoors. A celebration of life service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 8, 2023, at Resurrection Cemetery, 7801 NW Expressway, Oklahoma City, OK. Pastor Michael Milligan will be officiating. John was born April 4, 1934, in Adena, Ohio to John Stanley and Mary Figurski Kanoski. He graduated as president of his class from Cadiz High School. Many of his high school classmates were cousins. His childhood was spent helping his parents and large extended family with various family business endeavors. As a child, John loved to take things apart to see how it worked but often had left over parts when he put it back together. It was his love for mechanics that led him to develop modification of many products in use today. Shortly after high school graduation, John joined the Army and was stationed in Germany. After completion of his military commitment, he attended and graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. In 1969, John went to work for his beloved Ohio State University Hospital. In 1977, he moved to Oklahoma to work for Baptist Medical Center. Later, he was employed by the Hertz Corporation, Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality, University of Arkansas and Oklahoma Department of Corrections. He always gave 100% to his job and always wanted to continue to further his education every chance he got. He received an MBA from Oklahoma City University while working full time. Johns last 15 years of work was for Tinker AFB where he retired at age 80. While he was at Tinker AFB, he graduated from the elite U.S. Air Force War College. John was an avid tinkerer and handyman. He spent most of his weekends outside fixing or building anything he thought needed his attention. After retirement, he looked forward to the monthly Wednesday Mens Luncheon get-togethers. This group of friends would sit around discussing current news stories, their retirement activities and the general state of affairs of the world. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, getting to see them grow up and was proud of their accomplishments. Preceding him in death were his parents, John S. and Mary Figurski Kanoski, Cadiz, OH; and sister, Celia Kanoski (Rich) Dickerson, Cadiz OH. John is survived by his wife, Marilyn M.
