Obituary

John Julius Jensen, 66, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, died Sunday, September 24, 2023, after a brief illness. John was born to Julius and Barbara (Westerfield) Jensen on June 23, 1957 in Everett, Washington, while the family was en route from their home in Edmonds, Washington to visit relatives in Canada. The family later relocated to Portland, Oregon, and in 1960 they moved to San Diego, California. John graduated from Crawford High School in San Diego in 1975, where he was a member of the debate team. From elementary school age, John and his older sisters, Barbara and Judy, were involved in community theater, and as a teenager and young adult, John ran sound and lights at the San Diego Old Globe and Starlight theaters. The Starlight theater venue sits almost directly under the landing path for the San Diego airport. John worked as a plane spotter who signaled the conductor when a plane was approaching, then the conductor would direct the musicians and performers to freeze in place until the plane passed. In 1975, John began his college career at Point Loma College (now Point Loma Nazarene University) in San Diego where he also worked in the media center. In 1978, he transferred to Bethany Nazarene College (BNC; now Southern Nazarene University) in Bethany, Oklahoma, with a full scholarship to establish a student-run media center. In 1980, he completed his B.A. degree in Speech Communication from Central State University (now University of Central Oklahoma [UCO]) in Edmond, Oklahoma. While in college at UCO, John worked for the NBC Channel 4 television station and the State of Oklahomas educational talk-back television network. In the fall of 1978, only a few weeks after experiencing the culture shock of moving from California to Oklahoma, John met Carolyn Passig at SNU. They had their first date in February 1979; John proposed on March 3, 1979; and the couple were married on July 14, 1979. In 1980, John and Carolyn moved from Oklahoma City to San Diego, California where John was employed by Evangelist Morris Cerullo as a traveling sound engineer and video engineer which took John to many countries around the world. Carolyn was also employed by Evangelist Morris Cerullo and traveled with John on some trips. For most of the rest of Johns career he traveled extensively for business, and these travels took him to five of the seven continents. While living in San Diego, John transitioned from working in sound and video production to working in video equipment sales, and in video system design consulting. In 2007, John and Carolyn moved back to Oklahoma City where John continued his career as a sales engineer for video equipment manufacturers. He earned and maintained until his death the Certified Technology Specialist-Design credential, and he was selected as a member of the InfoComm Academy Faculty Program. Since 2012, and until the time of his death, he was Sales Engineer for IHSE USA, a world-leading manufacturer of keyboard, video, mouse (KVM) extension and switching equipment for video production. One of Johns co-workers characterized him as a KVM innovator who was known and respected worldwide. John found fulfillment in helping clients configure video systems. Some of his clients over the years included Hewlett-Packard, Fox News, NBC News, CNN, Las Vegas Raiders stadium, Milwaukee Arena, Warner Bros. Studio, Christs Chapel of the Valley Arizona, and Game Creek Video. John and Carolyn were members of Crossings Community Church and endeavored to live out their faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. In earlier years, John volunteered in several capacities at Crossings including running camera for the contemporary and sanctuary services and working in the audio and video booths. John recently developed an interest in family genealogy and traced his mothers family in Great Britain to before the Anglo-Saxon defeat in 1066 AD. John was preceded in death by his parents and his older sister, Barbara. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Dr. Carolyn Passig Jensen; his sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Dr. F. LeRoy Lafferty of San Diego; three nephews: Jason Lafferty of San Diego; Aaron and Rosemary Lafferty of The Woodlands, Texas; and Ryan Lafferty (Laura Talbott) of Poway, California; and five great-nieces and great-nephews. Memorials may be directed to Crossings Community Church or Southern Nazarene University.
