Obituary

John Edwin Cook, 75, of Oklahoma City passed away on Easter, April 17, 2022, in the home surrounded by his family. Edwin was born on December 9, 1946, in Wynne, Arkansas to Reba Charline (Coggins) and William Thomas Cook. He was their fifth child, with older siblings, Norma, Jerry, Yvonne, and Betty, and younger brother, Eugene. After briefly attending a public school in Vanndale, Edwin moved to the Arkansas School for the Deaf in Little Rock, graduating in 1967. While there he participated in many sports, with his team going undefeated in basketball and football. He was awarded All-American Tight End. He also was a part of a deaf Boy Scout troop which took a canoeing trip through Canada. He met Sharon Gail Purtee while in school and they married in Jonesboro, Arkansas in 1969. To this union was born Donald "Donnie" William Cook (1972) and Martha Ann (Cook) Highley (1976). Edwin learned how to run a printing press at the school for the deaf and worked for a newspaper in Illinois for a few years. In 1974 the family moved to Oklahoma with Edwin finding work at a document company. When the company moved to Texas, Edwin, not wanting to move, got a job at TG&Y, working there until the company dissolved. In 1988 Edwin started working for the Defense Logistics Agency at Tinker Air Force Base. He would retire from there 24 years later.Edwin and Sharon have worshipped at Bethany First Church of the Nazarene for nearly 50 years and found many wonderful friends in the Great Expectations Sunday school class. For some of those years they taught sign language to church members and trained some of their future interpreters. These ladies and their families held a special place in their hearts. Edwin was always proud to be deaf and had numerous friends in the deaf community, participating in bowling leagues, basketball and softball teams, and trips together. In many ways, this community became an extension of his family. Edwin enjoyed collecting coins and working on family genealogical records. He loved being with his family, spending many hours playing cards or dominoes with them. Edwin was known for his humor and enjoyed playing pranks and dressing up in silly costumes for church and doctors appointments. While Edwin accomplished a lot and was known for his humor, the most important thing to him was loving others. Many people would say he loved them like they were a part of his family. He offered a smile to everyone. He enjoyed watching neighborhood kids play ball and decorating his home for holidays.Edwin is survived by his wife of nearly 53 years, Sharon Cook, of the home; son, Donnie and wife Kendra, of Oklahoma City; daughter, Martha of The Village; siblings, Norma East and husband Art of Byhalia, MS and Roy Eugene Cook and wife Diane of Horn Lake, MS; sister-in-law, Tinki Cook of Sedro-Woolley, WA; Uncle Red Coggins of Moline, IL and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Edwin was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Charline Cook; brother, Jerry Cook; sisters, Yvonne Gilbert and Betty Hurst; brother-in-law, Oscar "Rip" Gilbert; and nephew, Michael Cook.
