John Franklin Brewer 1932-2018
The heavenly choirs sound sweeter today because John Franklin Brewer joined them on Sunday, September 30, 2018. His well-used and hard-working heart failed him for the last time.
John was born in McGehee, Arkansas December 21, 1932 to William Clinton and Vinnie Jim Harris Brewer. As the baby of the family he had two older sisters to pamper him and two older brothers to keep him in his place. He only got to enjoy his favored status for two years when another sister was born. Now she was the baby of the family.
John began singing when he was six years old and never really stopped, although he was frustrated in his later years when his laboring lungs would no longer support his magnificent voice. He loved listening to and singing classical music. But his family will miss hearing his versions of McNamaras Band and the Great Philadelphia Lawyer.
John was proud to be a Pine Bluff Zebra, graduating in 1951. After high school he left the trees of Arkansas for the plains of West Texas, to attend the Texas Technological College in Lubbock, now known as Texas Tech University. He received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1959, but the greater prize was the coed he met on a blind date. Genevieve Self (Aunt Genny to most of us but John always called her Genevieve) would become his lifelong companion. After dating for two years, John and Genevieve eloped to Clovis, New Mexico because, as John said, "New Mexico had no waiting period."
John was a born salesman. After college he sold Dr. Pepper in St. Louis, IBM Typewriters in Amarillo, but found his calling selling Patient Care products for Johnson & Johnson. He worked for J&J for 22 years, winning many awards, including being named Professional Salesman of the Year.
John and Genny had one son, John F. Brewer, Jr. born in Lubbock in 1956. Johnny died much too soon after a lengthy illness in 2010.
After retiring, John and Genny bought an RV which became their "home away from home" for five years. They saw the four corners of the USA and parts of Canada before finally coming home to stay in Bethany. The also toured parts of Europe. John was an accomplished amateur photographer who saw that their travels were well-documented with pictures.
John is survived and missed by his best friend and wife of sixty-three years, Genevieve Brewer, and a grandson, Mark Brewer of California. Also missing him are his baby sister Marcia Massey, sister-in-law Bobbye Brewer, cousins both old and young, many nieces and nephews, and even more great nieces and nephews.
Going ahead of John were his parents, his sisters Peggy Criswell and Helen Mellinger, and his brothers Bill and Jim "Hugo" Brewer.
Flowers are always welcome, but John would be pleased to have memorials sent to the Heart Association, Integris Hospice or any worthy cause of your choice. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, October 6, 2018, at the Mercer Adams Funeral Home in Bethany.
