Joan Eloise Chaney went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Friday, April 9th, 2010, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born June 14, 1927, in North Baltimore, Ohio, the third of eight children born to Omar and Octa Sites. In 1938, her family moved to Cement, Oklahoma when her father was transferred with the Ohio Oil Company. She graduated in 1945, Valedictorian of her Senior Class, at age 17 from Cement High School. Joan attended Hills Business College in Oklahoma City following graduation and worked in the areas of bookkeeping, secretarial and office administration for over 50 years, retiring from Tinker in 1997. She married James Emory Chaney in Norman in 1950. She was a wonderful wife and mother, always adjusting her work schedule around her childrens activities. Joan was an active member of Putnam City United Methodist Church where she volunteered in the church office and served in the U.M.W. She was also actively involved in the Red Hat Society formed through her church. Joan was preceded in death by her parents and three siblings, Evelyn Bledsoe, Richard Sites and Dorthy Johnson. She is survived by her daughter Jami Brown and husband Jim; son James Chaney Jr., all of Oklahoma City; granddaughter Kristin Sneed and husband Houston of Edmond; grandsons Matthew and Andrew Brown of Oklahoma City; great-granddaughters Alyssa Brown and Lily Grace Sneed; sisters Nona Hale of Tulsa and Lynn Charleson and husband Buddy of Cement; brothers Harry Sites and wife Peggy of Cement and Omar Sites and wife Carol of Chickasha; brother-in-law Rupert Johnson; and a host of nieces and nephews. Services will be held at Putnam City United Methodist Church on Wednesday, April 14th, at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the U.M.W. in care of the church. The family would like to thank Dr. Dennis Parker and Carter Hospice for their excellent care of Joan during her illness, and the loving staff and residents of Southern Plaza Retirement Community in Bethany.
