Obituary

Janet "Jan" Kay (Stewart) Ketola A compassionate yet tenacious helper of those in need, Jan (Stewart) Ketola died unexpectedly at her Bethany, Oklahoma home on May 6, 2019. She was born on April 8, 1946 in Anthony, Kansas to Bill and Mary Belle Stewart as the oldest of three children. From her beginning years, her health created difficulties for then known as Janet Kay. Having Rheumatic Fever, she was required to undergo monthly injections given by her father. She was also born with a hole in her heart and was one of the earliest recipients of heart surgery conducted on a child at Kansas University Medical Center. Her heart issues required that she refrain from physical activity at school and until she reached adulthood. Jan attended the public schools in Medicine Lodge, Kansas from which she graduated high school. Growing up in Medicine Lodge, she was involved in Girl Scouts, Rainbow Girls and the youth and music activities of First Christian Church. After High School, she attended Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma for two years. She then moved to the Oklahoma City area where she continued to live until her death. She worked at St. Anthonys Hospital, Physicians offices and in Customer Service for several area banks. Her most gratifying employment was with Habitat for Humanity helping to initiate and manage Habitats "Renovation Station", now called ReStore. She retired from Habitat in 2017. During her life in Oklahoma City, she was an exceptionally active member and leader of Western Oaks Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). She led many of the departments of ministry and served several years as an Elder. Her greatest love was born to her and was named Nathan, a multi-handicapped son who she raised as a single mother. He survives her, as does a brother, W. Dale Stewart (Terri), brother-in-law, Jerry Allen, niece, Lynda Allen Chester (Brian) and nephews, Pete Stewart (Marla), Damon Stewart (Carrie) and Aaron Stewart (Jessica). Jan was preceded in death by her parents and greatly loved sister, Carol S. Allen (Jerry). She is also survived by the many poor, homeless, handicapped and forgotten whose value she championed until she had no more life to give. Viewing will be Thursday, noon-9pm at Mercer-Adams.
