Jack Leland Powers passed away peacefully, nine days short of age 96, at 3:10 p.m. on February 23, 2020, in Oklahoma City, OK. Dad was born on March 3, 1924, in Cheyenne, OK, to Jack D. and Noma Powers. He had two older brothers, Raymond and Powell, and later a younger sister, Lela Faye. The next twelve years of his life were spent in the little western Oklahoma town of Durham. At the age of nine or ten, dad gave his life to the Lord and was baptized into the Durham Baptist Church. After high school graduation in 1942, and one semester at Oklahoma A&M (OSU), he joined the U.S. Navy and served his country until WWII ended. Dad then moved to Oklahoma City and lived with his parents, who had relocated there to work at Tinker Air Force base during the war, while attending and graduating from the University of Oklahoma in 1950. With a degree in Mechanical Engineering, dad went to work for IBM as a Customer Service Engineer from 1950 to 1987. In 1953, while attending Trinity Baptist Church, dad met the love of his life, June Manning, who had come from West Virginia to visit her sisters in Oklahoma City for a "couple of months". Dad and mom fell in love and were married in 1955, until mom passed away in 2008, just short of their 53rd wedding anniversary. In 1956 their son, Leland Edward, was born, followed by a daughter, Julia Venice, in 1958. After moms death, dad continued to live in his home until he moved into Southern Plaza Assisted Living in Bethany, OK, just over two years ago. Dad was blessed by a clear mind until the day he died, giving us the precious gift of his words of love for us and allowing us to do the same for him. Words cannot describe the loss felt by our family and those who loved Dad. He was a respected man of character, always honest, kind and patient and always a loving husband, father and grandfather. He had a strong faith in Christ and did not fear leaving this world. We were so blessed as a family to have such a wonderful man in our lives. Dad was preceded in death by his parents and both brothers, along with his precious wife, June, and son, Leland. His legacy of love still survives through his daughter and son-in-law, Juli and Lynn Bloomer, grandson, Kyle Bloomer and granddaughter and her husband, Sha and Bryan Bloomer, as well as his great-granddaughter, Charlotte. He is survived by his sister, Lela Faye Walker and dads niece, Teresa Harmor, is also a much-loved member of our family. Our family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Southern Plaza for the loving care they gave dad these past two years and also the caring staff at Mercy Hospital, who gave care and comfort to dad in his final days. And, we cannot express enough how grateful we are for the years of care given to dad by Dean Drooby, MD. He is a rare and amazing doctor who truly seeks the best for his patients, spending countless hours at the hospital with dad the last couple of days of his life. A viewing for dad, with family present, will be Friday, February 28, from 6-8 p.m. The service will be Saturday, February 29, at 10 a.m. at Mercer-Adams Chapel, Bethany, OK.
