Obituary

Jack Carlton Humphreys, 88, of Oklahoma City went to his eternal home on December 30, 2010. He was born in Lawton on September 29, 1922, the son of George and Dora. He grew up in Oklahoma City, Watson, Sapulpa, and Guthrie, and graduated from the University of Oklahoma. There he met Bonnie Mahaffey, began their exciting love affair, and started their 69 years of marriage on August 31, 1941. Jack proudly served as an U.S. Army artillery officer in Europe in World War II, earning the French Croix de Guere Medal of Honor. He was a classic entrepreneur, and worked for thirty five years in retail (Jacks 5 & 10) and distribution (Jacks Service Co.). His amazing gift with and love for numbers and his great memory for figures continued until just a few years ago when the Alzheimers finally took its toll. Jack credited God and Bonnie for the growth of the business and investments that enabled him to retire from active business at the age of forty-nine. At that time, he became a volunteer instructor for The Billy Graham Association. He and Bonnie spent four to five months a year for the next twenty-five years training tens of thousands of counselors for the Billy Graham Crusades world-wide. This work became a true joy for him. Jack was the physical embodiment of the term Eternal Optimist. It is not surprising, then, that he claimed that his favorite Bible verse was Ephesians 6:40. Since there is no Ephesians 6:40, Jack would smile as he explained that he was actually referring to Ephesians 3:20 only doubled. It says, God can do anything, you know far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! Jack credited Jesus Christ with every blessing. He lived an enthusiastic and passionate life, and never missed an opportunity to ask, Have you made the marvelous decision to have a personal relationship with Jesus Better known as Poppy by his family, he spent most of the second half of his life spending time with his family and serving the Body of Christ through his church and the Billy Graham Association. He loved studying the Bible each week while preparing for his Sunday School class at Northwest Baptist Church. Right up until the end, he read from his Bible daily, and with delight. Paul writes, Right now we have three things to do: Trust steadily in God, hope unswervingly, love extravagantly. Poppys FAITH prompted him to be the Master Encourager, his HOPE allowed him to be an Eternal Optimist, and his LOVE caused him to be a Generous Giver. As he traveled with Graham he became the Master Encourager of hundreds of pastors and staff. Everyone always loved having a lunch with Jack or having him come by the office. To the many Christian workers that he supported, Poppys positive spirit was even more important than his Generous Giving. Poppy and Mom Mom for years have quietly provided for widows, family members, church staff, and Christian workers. In the hearts of his family, Romans 12:10-13 seems to describe Jack. It says, Be devoted to one another in brotherly love fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation contributing to the needs of the saints, practicing hospitality. If God were to speak to us today, He could say these words about Jack, I've sent him to you so he could encourage you in your faith. (Colossians 4:8). Jacks life could easily be described by quoting Proverbs 11:25, which says, The one who blesses others is abundantly blessed; and to Jack, God is undoubtedly saying, Whoever believes in Me has real life, eternal life. Well done, good and faithful servant! (John 6:47 and Matthew 25:23) Poppys greatest legacy will not be through his business, or teaching, or other accomplishments, but through the life he lived with Mom Mom and his family. He left a huge legacy to the next three generations. Jack Poppy Humphreys is survived by his wife, Bonnie Gene Humphreys, and their four living children and their spouses: Kent and Davidene Humphreys, Kirk and Danna Humphreys, Craig and Beverly Humphreys, and Joy and Randy Fischer, all of Oklahoma City. Their sister, Jan, is already with Jesus, awaiting Poppys arrival. He also leaves his legacy through 14 grandchildren, Lance and Stacy Humphreys, Rod and Stevanna Wolfard, Kenda and Jason Hall, Kami and Mark Weems, Grant and Jenifer Humphreys, April and Todd Novak, Heather and Nick Laguire, Amy and Scott Norris, Blair and Maggie Humphreys, Blake and Elyse Fischer, Carly and Corey Graham, Annie and Jonathan Middlebrooks, Ross Fischer and fianc Chelsea Cooksey, and Sam Humphreys. Jacks great-grandchildren include Jake, Emily, Emma, Ford, Jack, Mary, Hank, and baby boy Humphreys, Caleb, Hannah, Nathan, and Rebekah Hall, Carly and Mack Weems, Faith, Jack, and Luke Wolfard, and Cole, Emma, and Lily Novak. Jack is also survived by his brother-in-law, Jim Mahaffey, and his wife Kathryn. Memorial Services will be 3:00PM, Monday, January 3, at Northwest Baptist Church. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Association, 6465 South Yale Ave, Suite 312, Tulsa, OK 74136 or The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, 1 Billy Graham Parkway, Charlotte, NC 28201.
