Obituary

Irene Mae Sparman Allen was born June 17, 1929 to Harvey Charles and Anna Mae Sparman in Rochester, Michigan. She left this mortal life on Friday, April 20, 2018. Between those two dates, she left a lasting and loving impact on countless lives with her loving kindness and compassion. She was a loving and much loved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and daughter. She graduated from Rochester High School in Rochester, Michigan in 1947 where she was a cheerleader, a member of the Honor Society, Co-Editor of the yearbook and a delegate to Girls State. She was on the Girls Tennis team and was an accomplished ice skater. She also played piano and organ for her Methodist Church and for many other denominations. The Lord, in his wisdom, brought a young man all the way from Canada to meet this outstanding young girl. After five years of admiration, Richard T Allen and Irene M Sparman were married on April 30, 1949 in Rochester, Michigan. After many adventures and living in Pittsburg and Topeka, Kansas; Wichita Falls, Texas; North Little Rock, Arkansas; and Enid, Altus, Tulsa, Oklahoma we finally settled in Oklahoma City in 1961. Our lives were changed forever when we were introduced to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints by friends and were baptized as a family on October 14, 1961. It was during this study of the church that we made the acquaintance of Don and Liz Sloat and their 4 children who became family, sharing many adventures over several decades. Our family grew to four children and a niece: Janice Lynn, Pamela Sue, Mark Jay, Tracy Lee and Leah Elizabeth. We have been blessed with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Our marriage and family were sealed for Time and Eternity on June 15, 1965 in the Mesa Arizona Temple. Irene had a full life managing active children while serving as PTA President, Girl Scout leader and in countless church positions including Primary President, Young Women's President (including director of Girls Camp with best friend Liz Sloat to try and keep some very creative and active girls rounded up), and was always the church pianist and organist with another close friend, Rebecca Miller. Irene was Co-owner of Allen Contract Furniture, Oklahoma City for many years. She was also co-owner of the Blanco Basin Cattle Company, Colorado and was presented the award of "Chief Cook and Bottle Washer" by friends who appreciated her many years of sharing her talents and warm hospitality. She was co-host of the Keystone Group, a church group and a church assignment, for many years. She and Richard hosted this group to a week and sometimes two at their Blanco Basin Colorado home. Irene was the perfect hostess whether in her Oklahoma City home or her Rocky Mountain Ranch home. She was known for her fragrant hot homemade bread and cookies - chocolate chip, snickerdoodle, peanut butter and more. It seemed some friends knew just when these delicacies were coming out of the oven because they would suddenly appear at the door where they were always welcome. Irene and Richard travelled the world, attended BYU Education Week every fall for years and served a church mission to the Genealogy Library in Salt Lake City. Irene's father, Harvey Sparman, served in World War I and died of his injuries when she was just 15 years old. She then assumed the care of her younger sister, Laura, when her mother had to find work. Irene is survived by her husband, Richard and her daughter Jan and son Mark and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, sister and her daughters Pam Belletini and Tracy Allen, and grandsons Clifford Brent and Chad Allen Belletini and Aaron and Joseph Allen.
