Idabelle "Ida" Lee Spencer Whaley was welcomed into Heaven on June 13, just three days before her 98th birthday. She was born June 16, 1923 on the family homestead southeast of Elgin, OK to Thomas A. Spencer and Sadie L. Early Spencer. She attended Mistletoe School and graduated from Elgin High School. She then received an Associate Degree from Cameron Junior College (now Cameron University). After college she was employed as a secretary in Lawton. While attending the Christian Church in Lawton she met James V. Whaley who was stationed at Ft. Sill. After James served in World War II and was discharged they married in 1946 in Oklahoma City. The two were married for 57 years and were blessed with three children.
Ida accepted Christ as her Savior and was baptized at the Fletcher Christian Church at age 12. The Fletcher Christian Church always held a special place in her heart, and she would attend services there when in the area visiting relatives.
Ida was a homemaker and devoted to her family. She was known for her oatmeal and chocolate cookies, cinnamon rolls and dinner rolls. She quilted by hand five full size quilts. Ida was a homeroom mother, Cub Scout and Blue Bird leader, and PTA treasurer. She was an active member of Wesley United Methodist Church for 60+ years until her health declined. Ida especially enjoyed teaching Fourth Grade Sunday School for 15 years.
Ida is survived by her three children, James "Jim" S. Whaley of Oklahoma City, Patrick Whaley and his wife Christy of Morehead City, NC, and Linda Whaley of Bethany, OK. Her three grandchildren brought a special joy to her life: Sarah Odom (Shelly) of Newport, NC; Elizabeth Potts (Casey) of Franklin, TN; and David (Suzie) Whaley of Franklin, TN. Great-grandchildren are Naomi, McKenzie, Dylan and Corbin and two more on the way. Ida is also survived by 2 nieces and 4 nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, James V. Whaley; parents, Thomas and Sadie Spencer; 2 brothers, Glenn Spencer and Giles Spencer; 2 sisters, Frances Waggoner and Lois Kleeman; and 4 nephews.
The family would like to thank the memory care unit staff of Legend at Council Road Assisted Living for their care. And a special thank you to Sharece, DJ, and Lisa of Valir Hospice for their loving care and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Fletcher Christian Church, 102 N. Sycamore Street, Fletcher, OK 73541 or the church of your choice.
