Ida Imogene Shirley went to be with her Lord and Savior on October 18, 2009. Imogene served the Lord by teaching her ladies Sunday School class until her 90th birthday. She loved to sew and was part of the Sewin and Stuffin ministry at Putnam City Baptist Church. The dolls that she helped make were sent all around the world through the Samaritan Purse Ministry of Billy Graham.
Imogene was born in Ripley, Oklahoma, on August 9, 1919. Her family included three sisters and two brothers born to Dow and Mary King. Imogene spent many years in Cushing, Oklahoma, where she met and married Joseph Andrew Jay Shirley on June 2, 1940. They were married for over 59 years. All three of their children were born in Cushing.
The family left Cushing in 1962 and moved to Grants, New Mexico for two years with Kerr-McGee. They returned to Oklahoma in 1964 and made their home in Oklahoma City. Imogene worked for Putnam City Schools as a library assistant and later worked at Kerr McGee from where she and Jay retired.
Imogene is survived by son Joe and wife Carolyn; daughter Ruth Ann Portman and husband Tom, all of Oklahoma City; son Bob Shirley of Tulsa; grandchildren Jay Shirley and wife Misty, Juliann Taylor and husband Dr. Jimmie Taylor, Rachel and Rebecca Portman, Chuck, Clint, and Clay Shirley; and brother Jerry King and wife Ann of Denver. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, three sisters, and brother.
Imogene will be remembered as a prayer warrior who served the Lord faithfully. She will be greatly missed by her children, grandchildren, church family and friends.
Services will be held Wednesday, October 21, at 1:00 p.m. at Putnam City Baptist Church in Oklahoma City with Max Alexander officiating. Interment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Putnam City Baptist Church debt retirement fund. A special thanks to Excell Hospice for their exceptional love and care to our mother.
