Sue Halpain passed on from this earth on June 5, 2018 at Integris Hospice House. She was born in Stephenville, TX on March 5, 1940 to U.G. and Mae Richards. The family moved to Sulphur, OK in 1945. Sue graduated from Sulphur High School in 1958 and went on to the University of Oklahoma where she earned a Bachelor of Music in Piano Pedagogy in 1962.
She married the love of her life, Bill Halpain in 1961 and they had one son, Philip. The family has lived in Bethany since 1964. Sue taught piano and music theory independently for 56 years and was very involved in the music community, serving as president and other offices of several music organizations including Central Oklahoma Music Teachers Association, and OMTA.
She belonged to Western Oaks Christian Church 53 years where she taught Sunday School, played organ and piano as a volunteer, sang in the Choir, and served on numerous committees of the Church.
Sue had a passion for flying, was a licensed private pilot since 1974 and accumulated over 1500 flying hours. She belonged to several aviation organizations with her husband, flying their Beech Bonanza all over the United States, Canada, Mexico, Bahamas, and Alaska. She served the Ninety-Nines (International Women Pilots) as South Central Section Governor, Oklahoma Chapter Chair and numerous committees as well as other flying organizations. Other memberships included WFI, BNA, Toastmasters and Town Hall.
Sue is survived by her husband, Bill; son, Philip, whom she considered her greatest accomplishment; brother, Gordon Richards and sister-in-law, Marlene; nephew, David Richards and wife, Sondra and their three children, Steven, Kennedy, and Alyssa; and niece, Shelley Bozarth and husband Troy.
The family expresses sincere appreciation to the Hospice House staff for their kind and compassionate care during her final days. In lieu of flowers, you may contribute to the 99s scholarship fund, the Oklahoma Pilots Association scholarship fund, or the charity of your choice.
A celebration of life for Sue will be 2:00pm Monday, June 11 at Western Oaks Christian Church, 8100 NW 23rd Street, Oklahoma City, OK.
