Hugh Delynn Wayman passed on February 15, two weeks shy of his 98th birthday. A leap year baby, born February 29, 1924, on a farm near Goltry, OK., Hugh was the seventh of 12 children of Jesse Earl and Mildred Secord Wayman.
After graduating as Salutatorian from Goltry High School in 1942, Hugh attended Oklahoma A & M in Stillwater before earning his AA degree at Central College in McPherson, KS, where he was the Student Body President. He graduated from Greenville College with an AB degree in 1945, attended one year of Biblical Seminary in New York City, and was among the first Free Methodist graduating class at Asbury Theological Seminary, earning an M.Div. in 1948. He also helped to start the John Wesley Seminary Foundation in Wilmore, Ky.
Hugh married Betty Jean Shields in Enid on June 6, 1947. Their happy marriage lasted more than 70 years before Betty passed on December 4, 2017.
After ordination in 1947, Hugh returned to Oklahoma where he and Betty served the Free Methodist Church for 41 years, planting two churches (Midwest City and Sallisaw) and pastoring four others (Green Valley, Bethel, Wright Memorial, and OKC First Free Methodist Church.) He was used by the Lord to win many souls to the Kingdom and had strategies to grow them in their Christian walk.
Hugh served as OK Conference Superintendent for 15 years and was elected to serve on many Conference boards, as well as Deaconess Hospital and Butterfield Foundation Boards. In his 70s, Hugh invented and patented a solar-powered cattle feeder under the name AutoWay. Central College recognized him as an Outstanding Alumnus in 1969 and awarded him "Fellow" in the Academe of Achievers in 1989. Deaconess Hospital also recognized him with the Distinguished Service Award in 1989, in addition to his many other awards and achievements.
Hugh said this as a conclusion to his ministry story: "the Lord has blessed us in so many ways. Though we never made a lot of money in the ministry, we never went withoutThe Lord has provided again and againWe have friends that are serving around the world. We have developed relationships that have continued to give life purpose."
Hugh is survived by their five children, Jeannette (Frank) Meitz of Florida, Dennis (Cheryl) Wayman of California, Joy (Mike) Wilson of Washington, Danny (Melissa) Wayman of Oklahoma and Dale (Karyn) Wayman of Indiana. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends who will all miss him.
