Hugh Morrill Smith peacefully passed of natural causes from this world in the presence of family members and "went home" to be with his wife and his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on "Good Friday" March 29, 2013. He was born on December 3, 1923, near Roosevelt, Oklahoma, in the rural home of William and Ruth Smith. He was raised on the family farm in Southwest Oklahoma, in the middle of the Great Depression with his parents and his brother, Walter. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1941 and enlisted in the Army Air Corps during World War II, serving as a bombardier on a B-29 Bomber. On leave at the end of the war, Hugh returned home and married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Melba L. Vaught, on March 9, 1945. They were inseparable for nearly 66 years of marriage. Hugh attended Oklahoma A&M in Stillwater, Oklahoma, by way of the GI Bill and earned a degree in Civil Engineering in 1949. He was hired by Charles Makins to oversee an asphalt plant and paving company in Oklahoma City in 1953. Through hard work, leadership skills, and entrepreneurship, Hugh eventually became owner and president of Makins Concrete Company, and founder and president of Atlas Paving Company, Atlas Asphalt Products and Materco Trucking. Hugh turned his companies over to his mentored son and son-in-law and officially retired in 1987. Hugh and Melba enjoyed life together and were inseparable for the next 24 years until Melba's death in 2011. Hugh M. Smith is survived by his three children: daughter, Debbie Metheny and husband Steve, and their children Jennifer Freeman and husband Troy, and Julie Sims and husband Kyle; son, Bruce Smith and wife Nancy, and their children Makenna, Kyle and wife Andrea, and Jeff Smith; daughter, Connie Metheny and husband Rick, and their children Jamie Smith and husband Steven, Rachel Roberts and husband Brent, and Matt Metheny; and six great-grandchildren. Hugh is also survived by his brother, Walt Smith and wife Bonnie of Houston, Texas. Hugh and Melba lived and raised their family in Oklahoma City where they attended Portland Ave Baptist Church for 60 years. They raised their children to know the word of God and made sure they graduated from college. They always supported the OSU Cowboys and went to most football games. Melba loved to fish and Hugh cleaned them for her at their Lake Eufaula cabin, where they spent many joyful days with family and friends. They traveled the world together, square danced, gardened, laughed, loved, and supported their children's and grandchildren's activities while always together. Hugh and Melba were raised during the Great Depression and were married during World War II. They started their life together with nothing but love. They lead a fruitful life leaving to their descendants a legacy of love, a love for one another and a love of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Services for Hugh Smith will be held at Portland Ave Baptist Church, 1301 N. Portland Ave, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. A private interment will be held before the services.
