Hildegard Fetzer Tietjen, 78, died September 12, 2016, in OKC from complications due to a vehicle accident Sept. 5th. She was born April 25, 1938, in Nuremberg, Germany, to Otto and Hildegard (Antholzner) Fetzer. Hilda might have been a "short German woman" with a quick, sharp tongue, but she was a survivor with a huge heart. Her early childhood was spent in WWII Germany experiencing the tribulations of that time and place. She related stories of growing up with bombs landing nearby from American military planes, being raised by her grandparents, educated by strict Catholic nuns, being a 14 year old homeless and alone girl for a time, and later struggling to survive as a young adult with a small child. Eventually, she found various jobs to make ends meet, even working within an American military medical facility for a time. Hilda became engaged to an American and secured immigration to the United States. She landed in the United States on St. Valentines Day, 1965, in New York City with her young son, Robert, by her side. She soon joined her husband in OKC, thereafter starting her new life. Hilda found various jobs in the U.S., including with APCO Oil and Aero Commander. She became employed with The Daily Oklahoman newspaper in the early 1970s where she soon achieved the status of District Manager, the first female to acquire that position. This job helped her provide for herself as a single parent with two sons. She excelled in her position winning much respect, many awards and several trips. Hilda retired from her manager position in 1998 but continued delivering newspapers to customers in NW OKC where she was sometimes only known as "The Newspaper Lady." Hilda often found various cats, individuals and families to help during her life even as she sometimes struggled herself. This little German woman who worked hard her entire life had a golden heart much larger than most could imagine.
Survivors include her sons, Robert, Barry Todd with wife Kim, and two much adored grandchildren, Reed and Destiny; sister, Linda May; nieces and nephews, John, Tammy, Jackie, Albert and their respective families.
