Herbert Wendell Williams (Wendell), 83, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma passed away peacefully on March 26, 2023 at Integris Baptist Medical Center.
Wendell was born on May 18, 1939 in Guymon, Oklahoma. He graduated from Guymon Highschool and earned a Masters degree in Architectural Engineering at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma. He served in the United States Army from 1964 to 1968.
He was preceded in death by his father, Herbert C. Williams; mother, Anna F. Williams; sister, Vanita Ray; and by his wife, Sonja Williams. He is survived by his brother, J.C. Williams; son, Mitchell Williams; grandson, Daniel Young; great granddaughters, Natasha and Alexis Cropper; and by his good friend, Carolyn Bryan.
Before establishing his own structural engineering company, Wendell worked for and managed the engineering departments of steel companies in Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Georgia, and West Virginia. He retired from Alliance Steel Buildings Systems, Oklahoma City in 2004. At one time during his career, he was licensed in more than 40 states. He was well respected and had many friends in his professional field.
Wendell was an avid card player, especially duplicate bridge and poker. He began playing bridge while in college and played regularly until a few months before his death. He was a member of the American Contract Bridge League, and served several terms as President/Chairman of the Board for the Sooner Unit #167. Not only was Wendell an Emerald Life Master, (having earned over 9,000 master points), but he was chosen as a member of the Goodwill Committee signifying his exemplary conduct while playing and his dedication to the growth and continuation of the great game of bridge that he loved so much!
Wendell was a member of Crossings Community Church where he attended services regularly until he became ill. He loved the music there and the Bible Study with Terry Feix on Wednesday nights. He tried to live his life to follow Jesus, by being committed to live by faith, be a voice of hope and be known by love to our neighbors, community and beyond. He was a kind and generous man who always went out of his way to help others.
A graveside service will be held at Sunny Lane Cemetery, 4000 S.E 29th Street, Del City, Oklahoma, on March 31, 2023 at 3PM.
