Obituary

Helen Munro Nease Lahmeyer passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 8, 2020 in the Southern Plaza Memory Care facility in Bethany, Oklahoma, with her daughter, Carol, by her side. Helen was born to Rev. Floyd and Madeline Nease in Everett, Massachusetts on December 30, 1929. She grew up in Wollaston, MA, close to the campus of Eastern Nazarene College where her father was president until his untimely death when Helen was but ten months old. Her mother was named registrar of ENC while raising Helen and her brother, Dr. Stephen W. Nease. Madeline was an early-days working single mother. Helen was a registered nurse, having graduated from the New England Deaconess School of Nursing and Eastern Nazarene College. In 1980, she earned her Masters Degree from the University of Oklahoma. She was employed by Integris Baptist Hospital from her arrival in Oklahoma in 1973 to 2003. She was an instructor in the Nursing Education Department until 1980 when she organized the Employee Health Department at Baptist, which she managed until her retirement in 1991. She continued on a part-time basis until 2003. If you were an employee at Baptist Hospital, you knew Helen and she knew you, because she had administered your employee physical or treated your minor ailments. Helen moved her young family to Bethany from Ohio in 1973, seeking a new start and new adventures, after her brother, Steve, assumed the presidency of Bethany Nazarene College (now Southern Nazarene University). She brought her children -- Steve, Carol, and Mark to start a new life together. Helen was always working on a project, whether it be volunteering at various medical clinics, making homemade chocolate treats, knitting, or crafting those plastic yarn thingies (Kleenex boxes, bookmarks, signs, etc.). Her family could always count on a plate of holiday-themed chocolates at their Christmas, Thanksgiving or Easter table. Visitors to Southern Plaza in recent years would see Helen sitting in the lobby with her friends, knitting caps for newborn babies at Integris Baptist. In her last active years, over 4000 Integris Baptist babies went home with a warm, handmade knit cap, crafted from Helens caring hands. Helen enjoyed eating out, and there wasnt a restaurant in the Oklahoma City area that she hadnt tried. She was an active participant in the Red Hat Society for many years, making quite a scene with her friends with their floppy red hats and purple jackets at eating establishments across the metro. She was active at Bethany First Church of the Nazarene and the Reach Out Sunday School class, and sang alto on the front row in the Cathedral Choir for over thirty years. In 2004, her fellow choir members honored her with the Lifetime Choir Member award. In 2008, in a 21st Century version of a senior citizen Youve Got Mail, Helen met Hank Lahmeyer online. After a whirlwind courtship, Hank moved from San Diego and married Helen. For 4-1/2 years until his untimely death in 2012, Hank loved and lifted Helen to the happiest years of her adulthood. For Hanks life, Helens family is forever grateful. Helen is survived by three children Steven Ernest of Dallas, TX; Carol Munro (Randy) Swanson of Yukon, OK; and Mark Robert (Cathy) of Aurora, IL; four grandchildren David (Kacy) Swanson of Alma, GA and their daughters, Maysn and Selah; Joel Swanson of Orlando, FL; Luke (Casey) Swanson of Oklahoma City; and Jonathan (Kelsey) Bradley of Port Washington, WI and children, Noah and Aiden. Also survived by her nieces and nephews, Linda (Dennis) Nease Scott of Hanover, MA; Floyd (Brigid) Nease of Jericho, VT; Stephen (Cheri) Nease Jr. of Theodesia, MO; Melissa (Todd) Nease Wallace of Harrisburg, PA; and David (Beth Aiken) Nease of Montpelier, VT, and beloved grand and great-grand nephews and nieces too numerous to list. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Madeline Nease, brother and sister-in-law, Stephen and Christine Nease, "Auntie," Bertha Munro, nephew, David Hardy Nease, niece, Cindy Barnes Nease, and of course, her beloved Hank. The family thanks the caring and attentive staff of Southern Plaza for making her last four-plus years safe and joy-filled.
