Helen Caroline Lafferty was born the youngest of four children on April 15, 1940 to John Miskelly, Sr. and Mildred (Fossedal) Miskelly in Bethany, Oklahoma. She was called to her Eternal home after a brief illness on February 2nd, 2015. After Helen was born, the family moved to the Spencer area where she grew up. She graduated from Choctaw High School. When she was five years old, Helen suffered a devastating illness which nearly took her life. She was rushed to Children's Hospital (then known as Crippled Children's Hospital) in Oklahoma City and diagnosed with acute osteomyelitis. The United States had just begun making penicillin available to civilian citizens after World War II ended, and it was not widely distributed at that time. Hospital staff quickly went to work trying to find the new wonder drug, and Helen's life was spared. Years later she underwent hip replacement due to damagefrom the disease. Working alongside her father, Helen learned to reupholster furniture and raise flowers. She enjoyed all kinds of crafts, sewing, cross-stitch, crochet, art, playing the accordion, decorating, and Corvette Motocross competitions. But her greatest joy was her family. In 1961, she married Boyd Wallis, and they had two children, whom she adored. She was soon a single mother, working as a bookkeeper for C.R. Anthony. In 1983, she married Berry Lafferty, who brought a new "Mississippi" family to love and spend time with. Berry and Helen moved to Eufaula in 2007, and she soon made new friends through crafting, working, and enjoying the company of new friends and neighbors. She and Berry celebrated their 31st anniversary in December. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, John Miskelly, Jr., and brother-in-law, William Patterson. She is survived by her husband, Berry Lafferty; her daughter, Susan Knab and husband, Tom; her son, Brian Wallis and wife, Jane, three granddaughters, Jessee Pearce, Mikala Medcalf, and Taylor Medcalf; and one great-granddaughter, Kailey Medcalf. Helen is also survived by two sisters, Harriett Pribble and husband, Emerson, and Ruth Patterson; as well as many nieces, nephews and other family members. Everyone who knew Helen was drawn to her friendly smile and loving personality and she will be greatly missed. Services will be held Friday, February 6th at 10:00am at Council Road Baptist Church, 2900 N. Council Road, Bethany, Oklahoma under the direction of Mercer-Adams Funeral Service. Afterward, the family will gather at Bethany Cemetery where she will be buried beside her parents and her brother, John.
