Obituary

Hazel Delores Callaway, 94, passed away October 28, 2009 in Midwest City, Oklahoma. Hazel was born October 1, 1915 in Tishomingo, Oklahoma. She was the oldest of five children, three of whom preceded her. She married Charles W. Callaway, July 21, 1935 and they shared their lives together until his death in May 1980. She is survived by a sister, Norma Lee Bruner, of Las Vegas, Nevada; a daughter, Ester Charlene Goble and husband, Thomas, of Temecula, California; two sons, Robert E. Callaway and wife, Janice, of Choctaw, Oklahoma and Clifford K. Callaway and wife, Althea, of Charlotte, North Carolina; eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Hazel graduated from Murray State College, Tishomingo and Bethany Nazarene College, Bethany, Oklahoma where she received her B.A. in 1940. She received her teachers Life Certificate from the University of Oklahoma, also in 1940. She taught school for many years in Bethany, Oklahoma and Albuquerque, New Mexico. She retired from Hilldale Elementary School, Putnam City School District in 1980. She belonged to the Association of Classroom Teachers (President 1970-71); Oklahoma Education Association (local and state); National Education Association; Parent Teachers Association (President, Bethany High School); United Parents Association (representative for P.S. 36, Greater New York); Second Grade Share Club, Booster Club, Putnam City; Kappa Kappa Iota (charter member, Albuquerque, New Mexico and Beta Phi, Putnam City). She was also a member of The McDowell Club of Allied Arts in Oklahoma City, which supports art and music activities. During Hazels life, she was active in the Church of the Nazarene, first in Bethany First Church of the Nazarene, then in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Valley Stream, New York and Springfield, Missouri. She contributed to the churches by sharing her talents playing piano, organ, singing in the choir, teaching Sunday school and being active in missionary work on the local and district level. When she returned to Bethany, she served her church in Bethany until 1998 as choir member and choir librarian. Her other interests included gardening, needlework and watercolor painting. She was also a Deaconess Hospital volunteer and sponsored the Volunteer Group on Saturdays and summers. After retirement, she enjoyed traveling in 48 of the 50 states, Mexico, Canada, Europe and Bahama Island. She raised a wonderful family and contributed much to the community through her public school teaching and volunteer work. Viewing will be Friday, October 30, 9:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m. with the family receiving visitors from 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. at Mercer-Adams. Funeral service will be held Saturday, October 31, 2:00 p.m. at Mercer-Adams Chapel, 3925 N. Asbury with interment to follow in Bethany Cemetery.
