Obituary

Harrison Ransom Samuel Davis, Jr. lived a long and fruitful life blessing and being blessed by thousands of family, friends, students, and fellow believers along the way. He was born June 14, 1917, in the family farmhouse on the NW quarter of section 18, Township 1 South, Range 23 West of Norton County, Kansas. Harrison was the second of seven children born to Harrison R.S. and Grace R. Davis. He left his mortal life peacefully on December 24, 2010. Harrison attended Norton County Rural District No. 58 School and Norton Community High School until his freshman year and then worked on the family farm until he was 21. This is when he was converted to the transforming life in Jesus Christ. He finished his high school education at the Pasadena Academy and then earned his Bachelors (1945) and Masters Degrees (1947) at Pasadena College (now Point Loma Nazarene University). Harrison also did post grad work at UC Berkley (1956-57) and University of Southern California (MA 1963) and received his Doctorate of Divinity from PC in 1969. Harrison devoted 40 years teaching youth in the classrooms and hallways of Japan Nazarene Theological College, Japan Christian Junior College, and Meikei Gakuen. He also served as president of JCJC from 1959 to 1985. His stateside teaching assignments included Pasadena College (1947-1950) and Southern Nazarene University (1990-1994). He taught many subjects although his favorites were English and Greek. He was ordained as a minister in the Church of the Nazarene in 1950 and served on the mission field in Japan from 1950 until 1990. Along the way he lectured at various Japanese public schools, wrote articles for professional journals, and penned tens of thousands of hand-written letters to nearly everyone who ever crossed his path. Although honors from his peers seemed unimportant to Harrison, he accepted them with humility and a little humor. A few of these were Alumnus of the Year at Pt. Loma in 1983, Education Award from Japan Private Colleges Association in 1985, named a Fellow with the Reed Leadership Foundation, and the Order of the Rising Sun from Emperor Hirohito in 1990 in recognition for his contributions to education in Japan. (Maybe for being the only foreigner to ever carry his briefcase to the summit of Mt. Fuji in case there was time to catch up on some reading or grading papers!) Harrison met Doris Kathryn Wagner, daughter of Rev. Howard H. and Gladys L. Wagner, when they were attending Pasadena College. They married on July 25, 1947. Doris survives along with their children David H. and Joni Davis, Paul D. and Wren Davis, Stephen C. and Francine Davis, and Carol L. and Don Herth. Doris, Paul, Stephen, and Carol were each born in Tokyo. He leaves behind fourteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren along with siblings John, Alta, and Kenneth. Harrison was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings, Barbara, Crayton, and Lois. The family will receive friends from 6-8pm on Tues., Dec. 28 at Mercer-Adams. Funeral services will be Wed., Dec. 29 at 2:00pm at Mercer-Adams Chapel with interment to follow in Bethany cemetery.
