Harold "Hal" R. Hofener, 96, of Oklahoma City, passed away Saturday, July 19, 2025. He was born on June 5, 1929, in Taylorville, Illinois, to Irene and Ralph Hofener.
Hal was a graduate of OU School of Civil Engineering and enrolled in the NROTC program. His senior year summer was spent on a submarine. He served four years in the Navy on the USS Iowa during the Korean War as a Lieutenant JG, Division Officer and Gunnery Officer. After his military service he worked for a contractor and was responsible for two bridges built on Will Rogers Turnpike.
Hal worked for the City of Tulsa as Assistant Traffic Engineer. In 1969 he accepted a job with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation and moved the family to Oklahoma City. He worked for ODOT until he retired in 1991. He was the Chief Traffic Engineer for 22 years. After retirement, he and his wife, Becky, traveled extensively in the US and Canada. They were members of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Oklahoma City.
Hal was preceded in death by his parents; beloved wife of 59 years, Becky; daughter, Sheryl; and siblings, Norma Jean Brown, Marjorie A. Griffith, Helen Fischmann and Rev. Robert Hofener.
Hal is survived by his sons, Steve Hofener (Sherryl) of Oklahoma City and Scott Hofener (Renee) of Tulsa; grandchildren, Michael Hofener (Maggie), Stephanie Brown (Jerod), Jennifer Stonebraker (Bobby) and Erin Hofener; seven great-grandchildren, Caden Hofener, Preston Hofener, Makayla Brown, Henry Hofener, Haylee Brown, Emilia Stonebraker and Easton Stonebraker; and many nieces and nephews. Hal lived a full life and will be greatly missed.
The funeral service for Hal will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 25, 2025, at the Chapel in Memorial Park Cemetery, 5111 S. Memorial Drive in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Reverend Clint McMullin will officiate. The visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral with interment immediately following in Memorial Park Cemetery.
