Harold Lee Gary of Oklahoma City passed away peacefully December 10, 2008 at the age of 81 years. He was born in Mt. Pleasant, Texas to Coy and Leona Gary. He was preceded in death by sisters Kathleen, Ruth, and Geneva and brother Kenneth. He is survived by his sisters Dorothy Cooper, Loretta Courtney and Joyce Taylor and brothers Orville and Bobby. He attended school in Verden, Oklahoma until he joined the US Army in 1943 where he performed as an aircraft mechanic on B-17's while stationed in England with the 100th Bomb Wing. Later he became a tank crewman serving in the European theater until the end of World War II. After the War he remained in the Army as a military policeman serving in Germany until 1947 when he joined the newly formed United States Air Force. In the Air Force he continued to serve as a policeman. He also participated in athletics, joining his units boxing team, where he won the United States Air Force in Europe Heavyweight title in 1948. He served in the Air Force until 1967 when he retired at the rank of SMSgt in Duluth, Minnesota. He served over 24 years in the US military and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict. After his military service he became a car salesman in Duluth, where he excelled, winning Salesman of the Year on numerous occasions. He remained until 1984 when he moved back to his roots in Oklahoma City to retire. In 1949 Harold met and married the former Marie Frances Shuler of Oklahoma City. Their marriage was one characterized by the U.S. military where travel and family separation were a fact of life. Despite the challenges of being stationed at numerous duty locations, including Japan and France, they were able to raise and nurture a wonderful family. They were married for 33 wonderful years until her untimely passing in 1983. Harold married a long time family friend, Dorothy McAbee, in 1984 and they were together until his passing. This marriage was one of adventure and travel. They were able to visit Europe, the Caribbean, and Japan, not to mention the many trips they made to see our great nation. Their favorite location was Las Vegas where they enjoyed tempting lady luck. Harold is survived by his children: Daughters Karen Virta, Barbara Close and Becky Drennen; and Sons Ronnie Owen, Robert Kraus, Harold Jr., and William. He has 18 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. He loves them all. A private memorial will be held at Mercer-Adams Funeral Service in Bethany on Saturday, December 13, 2008.
