Greg Blackwood, 57, died peacefully at home in Edmond on December 13th after a five-month battle with pancreatic cancer. Greg spent his last day watching college football, surrounded by family and a steady stream of friends.
Greg was born on December 4th, 1963 to Joe Andy and Roberta Blackwood. He was baptized at Springdale Baptist Church. He graduated in 1982 from Rider High School in Wichita Falls, Texas.
Greg was quite the bowler in school and was even featured in the national Parade magazine. This was his first taste of the news business. His sisters, Donna and Debbie, fondly recall their grandmother taking them all to pick blackberries on the side of the road and Greg always raved about that "dewberry cobbler."
In 1986, Greg moved to Oklahoma and began a 34-year career at KWTV News 9 in Oklahoma City. His early years he edited news and then made a jump to photojournalist in the sports department. The years covering sports were some of his most treasured. He covered the Oklahoma State Cowboys with good friend, Bill Teegins, went to bowl games, the Final Four, the Super Bowl, and of course didn't miss a chance to cover his beloved Oklahoma Sooners. Greg was promoted to Chief Photographer in 2007 and remained in that position for the rest of his career.
Greg grew up listening to the OU Sooners on the radio with his mother. So, the opportunity to become part of the radio crew as a spotter has been the thrill of a lifetime. Over the past ten years he has said many times it was too good to be true. Greg even set up a camera in the radio booth and posted key plays on social media, a practice that has since been picked up by university radio crews all over the country.
Greg was married to Dana on a beautiful Mexico beach on July 27, 2013. The two loved beach vacations and yearly trips to Colorado where they enjoyed the mountains and Greg found his inner cowboy helping out on Dana's parent's ranch fixing fence and branding cattle. But it was hard to tear Greg away from his backyard, which he graciously shared with friends and family during many pool parties.
A smile came naturally to Greg, but if you wanted to see him beam just ask him how his children, Brian and Brooke, were doing. He married their mother, Liz, in 1983. He loved to talk about his kids, whether it was their starring roles in school plays or their accomplishments during adulthood. They were his pride and joy. The transition to a grandfather, or "Lolo", was just as enjoyable. His grandson, Kaipo, was born in August 2009 and granddaughter, Tilly, in June 2017. Gregs gentle spirit made him perfect for this role. When Greg married Dana, he also became the stepfather to her two children, Trent and Taylor. Greg made Trent his "apprentice" for his lawn mowing business and loved to talk about Taylors accomplishments in school and on the golf course.
Since Gregs passing, dozens and dozens of past and current coworkers and friends have reached out with kind words about Greg. "Always had a smile", "never a bad day", "man full of character and kindness" are just some of the recurring thoughts spoken. If you came in contact with Greg, you felt he was your friend. He treated you that way from the start.
He is survived by his wife, Dana; son, Brian and wife Angela; daughter, Brooke; stepchildren, Taylor and Trent; grandchildren, Kaipo and Tilly; his father, Joe Andy; sisters, Donna and Debbie; nieces, Kelly Lowder, Deanna Alexander and Krystal Hayes; and nephews, Kristopher Alexander and Zachary Witt. Greg was preceded in death by his mother, Roberta.
A virtual service is planned for Thursday at 10am at Gregs church. You can watch on the Holy Trinity Lutheran church Facebook page. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
