Gladys Ruth (Sherrard) Garman, 98, of Yukon, OK and formerly of Springfield, OH, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, July 30, 2011, at the Integris Hospice House in Oklahoma City. She worked as a 4th grade teacher at Reid Elementary School in Springfield, OH for 18 years. Gladys was a member of High Street Church of the Nazarene in Springfield, OH and recently attended Bethany First Church of the Nazarene in Bethany, OK.
She was born on January 3, 1913, in Springfield, OH, the daughter of DeWitt T. and Lacy (Crosen) Sherrard. She was married to Guy Russell Garman on June 23, 1941. They enjoyed 11 years of marriage. Guy was an infantryman in World War I and Gladys was one of the last surviving widows of a World War I veteran.
Gladys was a determined and resourceful lady. When Guy passed away in 1953, she had an 8th grade education. She later returned to school and earned her high school diploma. Years later, she received a BS degree from Wright State University at the age of 62. She was a dedicated teacher who was loved by her students and their parents.
She believed in her kids and motivated them to excel in life, spiritually and professionally. She encouraged them to attend church and to dedicate their lives to the Lord. Her children were the pride of her life and she talked about them often. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren always brightened her day. She loved singing her DooDeWoo song to them. She was affectionately named DooDeWoo by her grandchildren and Dooey by her great granddaughters.
Gladys loved people and she had many friends who were attracted to her by her wit and charm and who loved her in return. On many mornings, you would find Gladys at the Main Street McDonalds in Springfield, OH enjoying a cup of coffee and a sausage biscuit as she visited with a group of special friends. We would like to offer a heartfelt thank you to her morning group and to her other friends who loved her and looked out for her when she lived alone.
She enjoyed singing songs that expressed her love for the Lord. She knew many of those songs word for word. During the last few weeks of her life, she could be heard singing In that Beautiful City of Gold and The Beautiful Garden of Prayer. She sang the song Nothing But the Blood just moments before going to be with the Lord. Gladys knew that she was on her way to heaven.
