Gina Darlene
Mckean
Jun 18, 1963 — Mar 31, 2024
Gina Darlene McKean, 60, passed Easter Sunday, March 31, 2024, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She was best known as Ms. Gina and Aunt Granny. She was born on June 18, 1963 to Len and Sandra McKean. She was a loving and devoted daughter, sister and aunt.
Gina is survived by her father, Len McKean; brother, Brett McKean and wife Lisa McKean; nieces, Amanda Bennett and husband Lane Bennett, Emily McKean, and Sara McKean and fiancé Joe Charlton; and great-nephews Bryson and Braydon Bennett. She was preceded in death by her mother, Sandra McKean; and loving fiancé, David Wright.
Gina graduated from Northwest Classen High School in 1981 and recently checked off a lifetime goal by graduating Summa Cum Laude, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Christian Ministries from Mid-America Christian University in 2023. She was just beginning her journey to earn her Master's Degree.
Gina's heart belonged to Portland Avenue Baptist Church where she worked and served for over 40 years, with the title of Director of the Childrens Ministry for the past 30 years. She was very passionate about her work and dedicated her life to teach children the Word of God. She was a humble servant and her work spoke for itself, which included being coordinator and tutor for Whiz Kids and longtime community partner with Buchanan Elementary, which she attended.
Gina was a founding member of Mission Ignition and served as coordinator since 2009. She was a writer for Lifeway Christian Resources and Mr. Mark's Classroom, VBS Director for Metro Baptist Association and Tract Leader at Worship Arts Camp for Kids. Her accomplishments exude the sacrifices that she made. She was the recipient of the 2009 Darlene Koch Award for Outstanding Oklahoma Children's Minister. In 2022 she received the Willa Ruth Garlow Heart of the Child Scholarship award for veteran children's ministers and also the Valuable Volunteer of the Year for OKC Public Schools with Buchanan Elementary. The impact she made with Mission Ignition by recognizing her involvement and contribution, will be giving a prestigious award to a deserving child every year and will henceforth be called the "Gina McKean Award for Outstanding Mission Involvement."
Gina was a sports fanatic. If there was an OU football game or Thunder basketball game on, she was either in attendance, watching it on TV, or listening to it on the radio. She was always considered a fashionista, and always dressed in her Sunday best. She loved to go shopping with her sister, Lisa. She loved watching romantic comedies and classic movies and always speaking in movie quotes.
Gina was always so creative and artistic. But one of her many passions was arts and crafts of any kind, especially for her beloved VBS every year with her dad, Len, always lending a helping hand to make her visions come to life. She loved making special items for her friends and family. She loved the ocean and recently had the vacation of a lifetime to Jamaica and Grand Cayman where she swam with the dolphins, checking off another lifetime dream while enjoying God's creations.
Gina was always so full of life and was a joyous person. Her eyes sparkled while greeting everyone with her sweet smile. She was always the first person to drop off food, help with activities, or support families in need. Her warmth and kindness were always received by everyone who surrounded her, even until her final days. Seeing her love for all of God's children and her life devoted to her faith was a gift to those who knew her. Her impact and legacy will continue to live on through the Church and her loved ones.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in her memory to Portland Avenue Baptist Church. Gina's last wishes were to provide new turf and play equipment for the playground and new chairs for the Fellowship Hall.
Viewing at Mercer-Adams will be Friday, 9am-8pm with family present from 6-7pm. Memorial services will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, April 6 at Portland Avenue Baptist Church.
