Obituary

George A. Whiting, age 78 of Oklahoma City, died December 11, 2009 after a long illness. He was born in Portland, Maine in 1931, the only child of Edward and Florence (Flood) Whiting. He graduated from Deering High School (Maine) in 1949. He attended Portland Junior College and the University of Maine. He went on to the University of New Hampshire where he received his degree in Mechanical Engineering. He served 6 years in the Air National Guard. After graduation he was sent to Louisville, Kentucky with the General Electric Manufacturing training program. There he met and married his wife Margo in 1963. The couple moved to Newport, Rhode Island, where George worked in G.E. wiring devices. In 1969, George relocated with G.E. to Oklahoma City. He stayed on through a number of company changes and retired from Seagate Technologies in 1999. During this time he made many trips to the Far East. George loved sports. He golfed throughout most of his life and was a member of the Hole-in-One-Club. He played baseball, basketball, tennis, and ran track. He competed at the state level in table tennis. He ran half marathons, and was a member of the Oklahoma Runners Club. He coached youth soccer, softball, basketball, and table tennis. He was a member of the OKC Pacer Fitness Center for 25+ years. He was a man of great faith. He loved his church and was both an Elder and Deacon, and for many years attended mens bible study fellowship. His talents and abilities, his infectious laugh, his devotion to family and friends, and his lifes example are the legacy he leaves for his grandchildren and all whose lives he touched. He is survived by his wife Margo of OKC; his daughter Abby Horsburgh, son-in-law Jim Horsburgh, and two grandchildren Carson and Nikelle Horsburgh, all of Edmond, OK. He is also survived by his cousins Ellen Whiting of Princeton, N.J., Alger Flood of Claremore, OK, Randall Flood of Parker, CO, and Ruth Anne Cotner of Houston, TX. A memorial service will be held at Church of the Savior, 5600 N.W. 63rd, Warr Acres, on Sat., Dec. 19, 1:00pm. Memorial donations may be made to Church of the Savior Upwards Youth Sports or the Lewy Body Dementia Assoc., lbda.org.
