Obituary

George Willis Nokes was born June 20, 1910 in Hempstead County, near Hope, Arkansas to George William and Floy Alice Robinson Nokes. George had 9 siblings; Neoma, Enos, Rant Nichlous, Bruce, Willa Dean, Juanita, Mary called (Jackie) and twins J.W. and J.D. His parents moved the family to Granite, Oklahoma where all the children were raised. George adored rural Oklahoma and was always active, in returning to his roots, to maintain friendships and offer support. George graduated the 8th grade, at the age of 18, in May of 1929, and determined to receive a highschool diploma. He accomplished this in May of 1933 with 10 other seniors, at Ozark Highschool. While living in Weatherford, Oklahoma, George met Mary Ester Triplett and they were united in marriage on a rainy Sunday morning, July 11, 1937, in Weatherford. The ceremony at the Methodist Parsonage concluded and the newlyweds began a journey that encompassed 60 years. The young couple departed for California in August of 1937 to find work and make their fortune in the vegetable and fruit groves of Orange Cove, California. However, after 16 months of hard work and saving their funds, they returned to Western Oklahoma because Mary became so homesick for her parents and family. Sunday, December 31, 1939, their first child arrived at 5:00 am. The trip to the hospital was made in a severe ice and snow storm. Their new son was named after both sides of the family; William, for Georges dad, and Carlton for Marys father (Ernest Carlton). God added to the Nokes family by sending a baby girl. Betty Arlene arrived in 1947; however, her stay would be brief and she returned to heaven in infancy. George spent his entire career with Mass-Trans of OKC. Following his retirement he enjoyed working with Oklahoma Campers on Mission, and always assisted with Bible School at Putnam City Baptist Church. George and Mary spent enjoyable years traveling abroad, and touring the United States. They would often plan their next trip before they returned from their current travels. William and Connie received many itineraries keeping them aware of where and how George and Mary could be located. Georges church was a special part of his life; Sunday and Wednesday evening, would find George in a place of worship. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, in 1997. George is survived by his son, William C. Nokes and wife Connie, Enid, Oklahoma; grandson, Shaun, and wife Tammie, of Enid; granddaughter, Candace, and husband Kevin, Wichita, KS, along with 8 great grandchildren, Corey, Krystian, Kennedy, Casey, Keaton, Courtney, Kylie and Kade. Services will be held at 2:00 pm, Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at Mercer-Adams Funeral Service, Bethany, OK followed by interment in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, OKC, OK.
