Obituary

Doris Geneva Woodlee Hendrick, our gracious and loving Mother and Grandma Neva, passed from her home in Bethany, Oklahoma, into the loving arms of her gentle shepherd, Jesus Christ, in the early morning hours of December 30, 2014. Geneva was born at home in the East Tennessee mountain community of Coalmont on March 15, 1923. She was the fourth of seven children born to Carroll Morris Woodlee and Mamie Minerva Sweeton Woodlee. Geneva outlived her siblings who were Lincoln Jefferson Woodlee; Rubie Woodlee; Estella (Woodlee) Curtis-Dickerson, Naomi Agnes (Woodlee) Blanset; Carroll Morris Woodlee, Jr ("Junior"); and Douglas Woodlee. At an early age, Geneva developed a love of learning and never lost it. She studied in one room school houses and walked significant distances to school through the sparsely populated, mountainous region of her childhood. In her teens she made her way to Nashville, TN, stayed with relatives and attended Trevecca Nazarene College. She attended Nashville First Church of the Nazarene and was pastored by Rev. H. H. Wise who was a significant supportive influence in her spiritual maturity. There she met Robert Alexander Hendrick of Rosedale, MS. Bob and Geneva were married in Nashville, TN, on November 15, 1941. After working in Nashville and in Mississippi, the employment opportunities of the times and region seemed too limited and Bob felt led to pursue employment further west. He found an opportunity with the Post Office in Oklahoma City where he started and later completed a long and distinguished career. They found housing in Bethany. For more than a half century, the family lived in the house Bob and Geneva built in the late 1940's. It was a busy neighborhood with lots of children headed to the Bethany Schools where learning was a consistent priority. Their children found the best shelter for life was in their parent's commitment to each other, to their children, and to their trust of God's faithfulness to meet all of their needs. Bob and Geneva were parents to five children: Carrolyn L. (Hendrick) Salvatierra, Robert Paul Hendrick, Phillip Hendrick, Howard H. Hendrick and Martha Kay (Hendrick) Baker. Even as an adult and while still parenting her young children, Geneva continued learning and modeled life-long learning as she graduated as an adult from what is now Redlands Community College during the late 1960's. All of their children earned college degrees, four from Southern Nazarene University, and several earned graduate degrees and professional licenses. In addition to her faithful care of her family, Geneva was ordained as an elder in the Church of the Nazarene and served as the founding pastor of the Pleasant Valley Church of the Nazarene on 10th street in eastern Canadian County and later served as pastor of the Blanchard Church of the Nazarene. In the 1970's, she joined Bethany First Church of the Nazarene and has been a faithful member since. Geneva wrote and loved poetry and had a keen ear for music. In her later years, she was a dependable source of prayer for each of her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and her neighbors and friends. Bob and Geneva were married more than 63 years when he passed in 2005. She was also preceded in death by their son, Robert Paul Hendrick. Geneva is survived by her children and their spouses, Carrolyn and Jose' Salvatierra, Phillip Hendrick, Howard and Tracy Hendrick, and Martha and Roger Baker; eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren: David and Beth Salvatierra (Anna Marie, Daniel and Andrew); Edward Salvatierra (Eliana); Chelsey and Will Ingle (Edmund, Jude, Dominic, and Mercedes); Cally and Ryan Reyes; Christiana Hendrick; Hudson Hendrick; Katrina and Gerry Taylor (Jonathan and Kailey Marie); and Christopher and Chelsea Baker.
