Lackey Baker
Geneva Zell (Cox) Baker was born in Bowie, Texas, on December 3, 1919 and went home to be with her Lord on March 15, 2011. She was the fourth of seven children born to John G. and Flora Nicholson Cox. Her early years were spent in the northeastern part of Texas where she would play her guitar and sing in her church. In her late teen years, she met and married Charles Monroe (C.M.) Whitley who was an evangelist in the Nazarene church. From their marriage until his death in 1969, Zell and C.M. traveled across the U.S. singing and preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ with infrequent visits to Bethany, Oklahoma, which had become their hometown. Zell met William (Bill) Lackey in 1971, and in November of that same year, at the age of 52, she married Bill and became a mother to his three young sons: Lyndel, 12, Jay, 7, and Louis, 5. From that day until the end of her life, she spent her time loving, nurturing, and teaching her sons to love the Lord. They were the joys of her life and, as they married and had families, her overwhelming love for her family increased. After the death of her husband, Bill, in 1998, she met Donald Baker and married him in December 1999, and has resided in Oklahoma City since that time. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Leonard Clifton Cox and Doyle Gene Cox; and her sisters, Anna Muriel Davis, Verla Fern McKown, and Doris Deanne Pulley. Zell is survived by her husband, Donald Baker of Oklahoma City; her sons: Lyndel and his wife Cyndi and three children, Jonathan, Juliana, and Jace of Oklahoma City; Jay and his wife Cynthia and three daughters, Cassie, and Chloe of Wylie, TX, and Amanda of Lexington, OK; and Louis and his wife Lori and two daughters, Brittney and Brianna of Oklahoma City; one brother, Jack Cox, of Oklahoma City; 5 nieces; Faye Hall, Norma Branson, Cheryl Apodaca, Marsha Barrett, and Debra Wall and 4 nephews; Lawrence Cox, Jack Cox, Jr., Jim Cox, and Stephen Cox; 26 grandnieces and nephews, and numerous great and great-great-grandnieces and nephews. Family will receive friends on Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at Mercer-Adams Funeral Service. Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 18, 2011, at Mercer-Adams Chapel in Bethany, Oklahoma with interment in the Bethany Cemetery.
