Gene was born on April 13, 1927, to Everett and Walsie Turney in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. He was the fourth of seven children. He spent his first sixteen years in Pawhuska until his family moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1943. In the spring of that year, he joined the U.S. Navy at the age of seventeen. He trained in San Diego, California. After the end of World War II, he returned home to Colorado Springs to finish his education. In 1948, he reconnected with a girl he had known in elementary school in Pawhuska. On January 16, 1949, Gene married Doris E. Jones and they began a life together that lasted nearly sixty-eight years.
Gene and Doris had two children, Nancy and David. The family moved to Oklahoma City in 1954. Gene became an independent petroleum landman and, for the next forty years, traveled all over Oklahoma and into most of the states in the country. After retiring, Gene loved woodworking, crossword puzzles and working in his yard. Most of all, he loved family. He was preceded in death by his parents and all of his siblings.
