Gene W. Mitchell, 70, Oklahoma City, died in a car accident Thursday, December 4, 2008. Gene was born April 28, 1938 in Oxford, Mississippi to Richard and Dorothy Mitchell nee Waller. He graduated high school at Lisbon, Louisiana and earned a Bachelors degree in Science (Chemistry) from Louisiana Tech University. Gene met Ann Davis at Louisiana Tech and they were married on June 15, 1962. Gene went to work in the oil and gas business for Southwest Gas - later Kerr-McGee, and moved with the company to Oklahoma City in 1974. He retired from Kerr-McGee in 1997 and started GWM Consulting, where he worked until his death. Gene loved to work but he loved his church and his family even more. He was a Sunday school teacher for many years and put his heart into preparing the lessons each week. He was a leader for Celebrate Recovery and was a friend of Bill W.s for 26 years. He visited inmates at the Oklahoma County Jail each week to minister to those who wanted it. Gene was a loving husband to his wife, a supportive father to his children and a champion for his grandchildren.
Gene is survived by his wife of 46 years, Ann, of the home; his son David and wife Toni of OKC, his daughter Amy Simpson and husband Bill of Oklahoma City; and five grandchildren Garret Greenwell, Amber Simpson, Katie Simpson, Hunter Mitchell and Jake Mitchell, all of Oklahoma City. He is also survived by his brother Dwight Mitchell and wife Wanda of Homer, Louisiana, and a sister Joan Harris of Houston, Texas. Also many nieces, nephews and friends. Gene was preceded in death by his parents.
The family will receive visitors at Mercer Adams Funeral Service in Bethany, Oklahoma from 4-7 p.m., Sunday, December 7. Funeral Services will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, December 8, 2008, Cherokee Hills Baptist Church, Oklahoma City.
