Obituary

Francis Lee Johnson, 86, of Oklahoma City, passed from this life on Friday, November 23, 2018 to his new home with the Lord. The youngest of two children of William Ernest Johnson, a rural mail carrier, and Myrtle Elisabeth Robbins, a school teacher, he was born February 19, 1932 in Hermitage, Missouri. His early years included spending time on the family farm near Hermitage. While attending college in Springfield, Missouri, he enlisted in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska as a member of the Strategic Air Command during most of his service and enjoyed the experience of the Alaska wilds. Francis Lee met the love of his life, Virginia Allene Hamilton, in 1954 in Fort Worth, Texas while serving in the Air Force. They were married June 18, 1955 in Dallas, Texas immediately after his honorable discharge from the USAF, and moved to Oklahoma City. They raised two children and celebrated 59 wonderful years together before Virginia's passing in 2014. Francis began working part time with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation in 1955 as a Draftsman while attending college. He worked for ODOT full time as a Draftsman and then Highway Designer until 1970, when the family moved to Joplin, Missouri. During his ODOT employment, he was known to his ODOT "family" as "F.L." and "Flow Line". In Missouri, he worked for the Missouri Department of Transportation as a Senior Highway Designer. He enjoyed spending time on the family farm once again. He was active in Scouting with his children in both Oklahoma City and Joplin. Returning to Oklahoma City in 1982, he was again employed by ODOT. During his ODOT employments, he participated in two notable projects the Inner Dispersal Loop in Tulsa and the Lake Hefner Parkway in Oklahoma City. He and wife Virginia both retired from ODOT in 1996. After retirement, they began traveling, and it became one of their great joys in life. They loved traveling on their own in Europe, especially France. Francis and Virginia were also longtime members of Saint Luke's United Methodist Church in Oklahoma City. Francis was preceded in death by his only sibling, William Elbert Johnson. Survivors include sons, William Alun "Bill", of Oklahoma City, and Benjamin Warren "Ben" (wife Angela), of Martinez, California; granddaughter, Alexandria Leigh "Alex", of North Hollywood, California, and niece, Claudia (Robbins) Scherrey, of Fort Worth, Arkansas. A graveside service is scheduled for Saturday, December 8, at 10:30 a.m. at Rose Hill Burial Park, under the direction of Mercer-Adams Funeral Service.
