Obituary

Ezra Eugene "Gene" Porter, 84, of Oklahoma City, died Saturday, April 28th, surrounded by his family. He was born on August 12, 1933, in Oklahoma City, to Ezra Porter and Opal (Campbell) Porter. He attended Putnam City Public Schools for 12 years. After graduating from Putnam City High School in 1951, Gene married his high school sweetheart, the love of his life, Elizabeth Ann Morrison. They made their home in Oklahoma City where Gene worked as a florist for the family business, Porters Flowers. Upon graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Central State College, Gene, Liz, and their three children moved to Erick, and then Newkirk, Oklahoma, where Gene held band director positions. The family returned to Oklahoma City in 1970 where Gene continued his career as an award-winning florist. He was elected as a deacon to Putnam City Baptist Church, and also helped to start Tulakes Baptist Church and Cherokee Hills Baptist Church. In his retirement, Gene enjoyed traveling with his wife in their RV, holding offices in both the Traveling Teepees and the Okiebegos, and driving a bus for Putnam City Schools. If he wasnt traveling or spending time with his family, you could find him on the golf course. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, and his beloved "little mama" and wife of 42 years, Liz. He is survived by his children: son, Andrew Porter of Phoenix, AZ; daughter, Lizann Porter Cooper and husband, Bob, of Oklahoma City; and son, Glen Porter and wife, Elaine, of The Colony, Texas; grandchildren: Andrea Porter Becker, Holliann Snelson and husband, David; Robert Cooper and wife, Albany; Benjamin Porter and wife, Amanda; Abigail Thomas and husband, Tyler; and Lynleigh Mead and husband, Richard; and great-grandchildren: Sadie, Ella, Tatum, Amelia, and Charlotte. He is also survived by his brother, Jerry Porter and wife, Sandra; two nieces and a nephew; as well as numerous other family and friends. We will miss his funny stories and his beautiful smile, but will always treasure the love he had for his family.
