Evelyn May Keeton went to be with the Lord on June 29, 2021. She was born on July 6, 1927, in Pueblo, Colorado. Her music career started in Colorado, at the age of six. She started teaching while still in college as a music major, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in music from Bethany Nazarene College (now Southern Nazarene University). She also studied with Dr. Clarence Burg of Oklahoma City University.
Evelyn taught piano to approximately 500 students over 54 years. During her teaching career, she served as president of Central Music Teachers of Oklahoma, president of Southwestern District of Oklahoma Music Teachers Association, was active in Oklahoma Music Teachers Association, and was a member of National Music Teachers Association. She was chairman of the Piano Festival at UCO for ten years, and she adjudicated in piano contests across the state.
Evelyn was a long-time member of Bethany First Church of the Nazarene. She has been a church pianist, played for local civic organizations, and given programs in Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri. For 18 years, Evelyn enjoyed singing with the BFC choir and participating in the piano Kaleidoscopes. She organized and directed a kindergarten choir and worked in Vacation Bible School for many years.
After retiring from teaching piano, time was spent in arranging accompaniment music for piano solos, making numerous CDs and giving many Christmas and patriotic programs. At the time of her passing, she was planning a patriotic program that was to be given on the Fourth of July at the place where she was living, Southern Plaza, in Bethany, Oklahoma.
For almost 15 years, Evelyn led a prayer group in her home, then at Southern Plaza, with a small group of women to pray specifically for our military, our country, and our church. Their last time together was one week before her passing. Above all, Evelyn was a devoted follower of Christ and beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, J.A. and Beulah (Dunn) Hudgens; two brothers, Melvin Hudgens and Dr. A. Eugene Hudgens; and a sister, Alta Crush.
She is survived by her husband, Grant; daughter, Vickie and husband Steve of Oklahoma City; son, Steve and wife Sharon of Rogue River, Oregon; grandchildren, Dustin Stearman and wife Laura of Bethany, Sharilyn Starling and husband Greg of Oklahoma City, Josh Keeton of Rogue River, Oregon, Tawni Keeton Bocachica and husband Juan; and great-grandchildren, Jake and Samantha Stearman, Ben Starling, Joseph and Carley Keeton and Brayden Bocachica.
