Evelyn Etter was born in Alden, Kansas, on April 22, 1912, to Elsie and Clyde Van Horn. She joined her late husband in Heaven on September 11, 2012. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; her brother Russell; her sister Helen; her brother Kenneth; her brother Richard; her brother Lionel; and her husband, Carroll. She is survived by her daughters--Carolyn (Paul) Harris of Olathe, Kansas, and Marilyn Wilcox (Ken) of Anthem, Arizona; four grandchildren--Todd (Lynn) Harris of Overland Park, KS; Ryan Harris of Edina, MN; Randy (Leisa) Wilcox of Cincinnati, OH; and Melissa (Dann) Barbakoff of Anthem, AZ; three great-grandchildren--Kaitlyn and Jenna Harris; and Jude Three Ortiz. A few months prior to her passing, Evelyn celebrated her one hundredth birthday with family and friends gathered around her. Evelyn attended country school and later high school in Chase, Kansas. At the urging of her pastor, Reverend Lambert, she attended Business College at Hutchinson, Kansas. Following her graduation Evelyn was employed by Dr. S.T. Ludwig, President at Bresee College in Hutchinson, Kansas, to be his personal secretary and college bookkeeper. Evelyn met her husband-to-be, Carroll Etter, at Bresee College, where he was a ministerial student. They dated for 18 months before Carroll proposed. They were married on November 24, 1937. Following graduation they moved to Colfax, Washington, where Carroll became minister of the Church of the Nazarene there. Both of their daughtersCarolyn and Marilynwere born during their years in Colfax. The young couple pastored four years at Colfax, after which they moved to Parkdale, Oregonnear Mt. Hoodwhere they pastored for the next four years. In the summer of 1945, while attending a Nazarene Camp Meeting in Portland, Oregon, Carroll and Evelyn were offered jobs at Pasadena College as dorm supervisors by Dr. H. Orton Wiley, college president. From this point forward, the Etters became affectionately known as "Mom and Pop" Etter by thousands of young men who resided in their dormitories both at Pasadena College (now Point Loma Nazarene University) and Bethany Nazarene College (now Southern Nazarene University). Carroll completed a master's degree in religion at the University of Southern California. He served as dean of men at P.C. and B.N.C. for 28 years (1946-1974). He died on January 6, 1981. For several years after their arrival in Pasadena, Evelyn taught at Pasadena Academya private finishing school affiliated with Pasadena Collegewhere she taught business courses. Evelyn also worked at the Nazarene Book Store near the college campus. They were members of Bresee Avenue Church of the Nazarene during their years in Pasadena. In the mid-1960s they moved to Bethany, Oklahoma, where Carroll and Evelyn were employed as resident directors of Snowbarger Hall, Bethany Nazarene College's residence hall for undergraduate male students. Carroll and Evelyn became members of Bethany First Church of the Nazarene. Dr. E.S. Phillips was their first pastor at BFC, followed by Dr. Harold Daniels, Dr. Ponder Gilliland, and Dr. Mel McCullough. For twelve years prior to her retirement, Evelyn was employed in sales at Streets, an upscale clothing store for women in Oklahoma City. When her health became a major issue, Evelyn's family moved her to the Kansas City area to be near her daughter, Carolyn, and her family. She received excellent care at both the Epoch Center in Kansas City and the Good Samaritan Center in Olathe, Kansas. She is remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, faithful wife to her husband, Carroll, and friend to many. Memorial services will be Saturday, September 22, at 2:00PM at Mercer-Adams Chapel, Bethany, Oklahoma.
