Obituary

Ethel Faye Pate Ethel Pate peacefully went home to be with the Lord on Friday, January 22. She was born October 14 in Idabel, OK to Nathaniel and Edith Greenwood. Her Father died during the Depression when Ethel was 2 years old. Unable to care for her children, her Mother gave them to the American Legion Home in Ponca City, OK to care for them. Ethel and her siblings lived there until her graduation from Ponca City High School. After graduation, Ethel moved to Oklahoma City and served as Secretary at the American Legion Auxiliary State Office and Secretary at Crown Heights Christian Church. One summer during her youth she attended Falls Creek Baptist Youth Camp where she met the love of her life, Joe Pate. That summer at camp set the course for the life they were to share together. To avoid waiting 3 more months for Joe to be discharged from the Army, Ethel made a 3 day train trip to Seattle, Washington where Joe was stationed. They had been engaged for 3 years during the war. Joe and Ethel were married on April 13, 1946, at the West Seattle Christian Church and spent their honeymoon in Victoria, British Columbia. One of her favorite memories was spending their fortieth wedding anniversary in their honeymoon suite at the Empress Hotel in Victoria, B.C. For their 50th anniversary David and Lynda hosted a celebration for them with their family and friends. Dr. J. Clyde Wheeler, the pastor who was to have performed their original ceremony, performed a "family" renewal for Joe, Ethel, their children and grandchildren making it a special memory for the whole family. There wasnt any place Ethel loved to be more than with Joe. The high school sweethearts were still holding hands every chance they got, even after 75 years of marriage. Ethels life was based on giving. Whether it was through a smile, her laughter, encouraging words, or tangible giving through meals or knitting for others. Ethels life was devoted to her family, friends and church. She spent many hours preparing mobile meals for shut-ins, volunteered at the Salvation Army Auxiliary, Oklahoma Hospitality, Deaconess Hospital, and Baptist (Integris) Hospital. She and Joe spent many years working with the youth at their church. Many of the youth, now adults, have shared memories of their love and appreciation for the Pates; and the example they set for them while they were under their watchful care in youth group. They set an example of how a godly, loving marriage and family could be. You could see her heart and example of love and caring for her family as you watched them return that love to her through the care they gave her during her latter days. One of the things closest to her heart was her family and making a home for them. Hot meals, gingerbread houses, knitting, special times at Thanksgiving and Christmas, smiles, giving unconditional loveand when necessary "correction" for David and Lynda. She loved working in their flower beds, and they always looked pretty and manicured! When she had to give up gardening she would still oversee what was done by Joe and the kids. The highlight of her day was watching the birds and squirrels who, thanks to Joe, David and Lynda, always have full feeders, and are the fattest squirrels in the neighborhood. Ethel once said, "I learned to like sports because of my marriage" and like, she did. As Joe was an avid Oklahoma University fan and a softball coach at their church you would always find her there for every game cheering her husband and the team to victory! Ethel loved to travel. She and Joe enjoyed trips around the United States, to Europe, Caribbean Islands and cruises. One of their favorites trips was going to Austria and Switzerland with Joes sister and brother-in-law, Jessie Lee and Warren Mayo, to visit their niece and dance to "The Blue Danube" on New Years Eve. Her devoted husband, Joe Pate; son, David Pate; daughter, Lynda Davenport; grandchildren, Andrew, his wife Amanda; Lee Ann, her husband Justin; Billy and Brittany, her fianc Clay; and the blessing of her two great-grandchildren, Katie Lynne and Conner Lee will carry on the legacy of love and memories of their loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Others remembering her in their hearts and memories are her sister-in-law, nieces, nephews and a multitude of friends who will always remember her kindness and smile. She will always be remembered as "a life well lived, loving others!" The family would like to extend their appreciation and gratitude to her special and faithful caregivers, Ruth and Sheri, and Visiting Angels for the love and support they gave to Ethel and her family. Predeceasing her were her parents, Nathaniel and Edith Greenwood; brother, William E. Greenwood; sister, Leona Wells.
