Emmy L. Gleichman, aged 78, died peacefully on April 21, 2012 after a struggle with Alzheimer's disease. She was born on March 13, 1934 in Minneola, Kansas to George and Beulah Harshberger. She had two sisters, Norma and Ida and two brothers, George and Gary (deceased). She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Gleichman and is survived by two children, Mary Gant and husband John of Tulsa, OK, and Robert Gleichman and wife Shelly of Houston, TX. She is survived by four grandchildren, Casey Gleichman, 24, of Houston, TX, Katie Gant, 24, attending law school in New York City, Eric Gleichman, 21, of Corpus Christi, TX, and Molly Gant, 20, attending school in Norman, OK. Emmy married Richard Gleichman in 1956. As their lives and careers progressed, they moved from Derby, Kansas to OKC in 1967 where Richard transferred to a position in sales with Meadow Gold Dairy. While in OKC, they joined Messiah Lutheran Church and raised their family with the support of Messiah's extended church family. Emmy graduated from the Saint Joseph School of Nursing in Wichita, Kansas and worked as an RN her entire life. She worked in the evenings to earn her Master's degree from the University of Central Oklahoma. Emmy held various positions throughout her nursing career including: practicing RN, LPN nursing instructor, and ultimately the Director of School Nursing for the OKC public schools. Emmy had a passion for nursing and caring for others as her life was dedicated to this profession. Upon retirement, Emmy became very involved in volunteer work. She was an OSU "Master Gardener" providing community horticultural support. She enjoyed raising butterflies each year for the OSU butterfly exhibit at the State Fair of Oklahoma. Emmy had a passion for cooking. She cooked countless meals for "Mobile Meals," church meetings and functions, and Messiah's annual "Oktoberfest." Emmy even cooked German food for several other Lutheran churches around the country. Emmy volunteered at "Christmas Connection" and "Seniors," and she was often referred to as a "Full Time Volunteer." Her hard work and passion was a reflection of her commitment to her church family, and to the community. As an active member of Messiah Lutheran Church, she cared for many aged members during their final years of life. Her sincere passion in caring for others touched many lives. She drove members to appointments, stayed with them when they were sick and considered it an honor to help so many people. She was a committed Servant of God. Funeral services will be Friday, April 27, 10:00 a.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church, 3600 N.W. Expressway, with interment in Resurrection Cemetery.
