He was born on the family farm on March 6, 1930 in Butler, Oklahoma. My great grandfather staked his claim and homesteaded this farm in the Oklahoma Land Run of 1889. Dad was the youngest of 3 children. There was only one school house in Butler and all grades were in the same building. He lived approximately 5 miles from town and either had to walk to school or ride his horse. It was his responsibility to help with the milking of the cows, gathering eggs, and feeding the horses. After school he was expected to go to the field and help his father and uncles. Dad grew up in a very strict home. His parents were strong Christians and very active in the community. He also was very mischievous. He and his friends used to turn over outhouses on Halloween, write graffiti in his school books such as "in case of fire, throw this in". He even rode his horse Buster into the school house and down the hallway. Dad's first car was a shiny black Model A Ford Coupe with bright yellow spoked wheels. He was so proud of that car. He installed a pair of air horns underneath the hood. His buddies would ride with him down Main Street in Clinton and he would blow the horns, which would rattle the store front windows. Clinton police would pull him over but they were never able to figure out where the horns were. In 1948, Dad married my mother, Joyce Holly. In 1950, he joined the U.S. Air Force. My Dad had a strong relationship with the Lord. As I grew up, my Dad taught me so many things like having compassion for others, always lend a helping hand & love the Lord with all of your heart. When it was time for me to learn how to drive a car, he started me out on my grandfather's Ford F-100 pickup with the granny gear. You just couldn't kill that truck. He taught me how to plow & drive a tractor, gather eggs, milk the cows, pick cotton, bale hay and much more. Some of my most treasured memories was participating in many parades, play-days, and just riding our horses along Lake Overholser & the Canadian River. I wish I could have seen Nana's face, with her arms open wide, as she stood with Jesus to welcome you home. You will be forever missed but never forgotten! You'll always be my hero! I love you Daddy!
