Elmer B. Shellenberger entered heaven on Feb. 6, 2017. He was born April 15, 1924along with his twin brother, Almon Myronin Wichita, Kansas. Elmers family traditions and the Kansas-Mennonite/Nazarene heritage were deeply rooted in his heart. He often shared stories of the King family traditions and events from Hesston and Wichita, Kansas. Throughout his adult life, he wrote weekly letters to his three siblings and mother to keep them informed of his familys events.
Elmer served his country during WWII as a signalman in the U.S. Navy stationed in the Marshall Islands and wove those experiences into his teaching. He taught in the public school systems in Hennessey and Enid, Okla., before moving to Bethany, Okla., in 1960 to serve as Chair of the School of Business at Bethany Nazarene College (Southern Nazarene University).
Teaching was his passion. His trademarks were the "made-up" names he often gave studentsmaking them comfortable and enjoying laughter with themas well as motivating them to succeed academically and professionally.
Elmer received numerous awards reflecting his leadership; and during his tenure at SNU the School of Business experienced tremendous growth. He was honored with The B Award, received his bachelors degree from Wichita State, his masters degree from Phillips University and his Ed. D. from the University of Oklahoma.
Following his retirement from Southern Nazarene University, he taught at the University of Central Oklahoma. His love of teaching went beyond the academic setting; he taught the same Sunday school class at Bethany First Church of the Nazarene for more than 50 years.
Elmer enjoyed special friendship with "The Watson Group" and the "Compatibles"relationships he established at Bethany Peniel College and in church.
