Obituary

Esther Elaine (Barney) Krows Wood died, at age 76, when an internal power surge cut off her immeasurable light. The farm girl turned entrepreneur, world traveler, and purveyor of good taste, kindness and giving, rinsed out her final recyclable container on Saturday, August 12, 2023. Born in Shattuck, OK, the middle of five farm family siblings, Elaine was soon milking, riding, herding, driving, plowing, harvesting, working, laughing, and playing hard. Elaine was smart, skipping one primary school grade to graduate early as valedictorian of her high school class of 8. True love derailed her college career when she met and married Dale at the age of 17 (her parents approved!). Their lives together would be filled with fun and adventure. The couple would be deployed to Germany during the Vietnam War, welcome two children, move multiple times for USDA appointments, and spend a year living in Brisbane, Australia. Elaine always made a home, friends, and an impact wherever she was. Elaine leaned on values she learned early; pragmatism, industriousness, tenacity, and good-will, to build two extremely successful businesses. Her entrepreneurial success hawking food storage containers and home dcor would vault her to top management levels, earning her adulation, admiration, and rewards. In a second career move, Elaine would join the US postal service, serving as a rural route carrier. While her outstanding work would be acknowledged with advancement and leadership opportunities, the enormous outpouring of cards, gifts, cookies, candy, and food at holiday times were a testament to her warm personality. Elaine loved to read, play, socialize, and travel. She lived overseas twice, and additional travels by sea and air took her to 6 of the 7 world continents and well over 25 countries. She loved a good road trip, bus tour, or vacation, visiting almost every US state, some multiple times. A joiner and organizer by nature, she started or joined a plethora of groups and organizations, each one with friend-making, socializing, a purpose, and fun as requirements for membership. Her competitive nature was on display in games of all kinds, but cards were her jam. So much so that, once, while playing bridge, she was kicked out of the senior center for having too much fun! Her love of life, family and friends knew no bounds. She was caring, generous, and truthful. She was fierce with her encouragement, wanting only the best for those she cared about. She was loyal and pragmatic, assured and silly, endlessly faithful and strong; all traits that will live on in those who will truly miss her. Elaine is survived by her daughter, Heidi Hoskinson of Newton, KS; son, Matthew Krows of Crystal Lake, IL; sister, Gwen Peard of Bethany, OK; sister, Ann Moss of Amarillo, TX; brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Susie Barney of Fairview, OK; brother and sister-in-law, Neil and Rita Barney of Woodward, OK; grandchildren, Zoey Hoskinson of Newton, KS; Cody and Kinsey Krows of Irons, MI; and many other treasured family members. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale Krows of Mustang, OK, and parents, Harold and Dorothy Barney of Mutual, OK. Celebration of Life services are planned for Saturday, September 16, 2023, at 10:30 am at Fairview Baptist Church, Edmond, OK. ..........................................
