Obituary

Simply stated, Edgar Gene Douglas was an amazing storyteller. Known as "Gene" to his family and friends, his life weaved a story of Christian love, devotion to his wife and family, and insurmountable designs in craftmanship. Gene was precise and detailed in every aspect of his life. Whether he was describing his younger years in Seymour, Texas, as he worked two jobs and went to school, or about how he designed and handcrafted hope chests for his granddaughters and great granddaughters, he could bring to life with his words the picture he was trying to convey.

His story was particularly vivid in the way he loved God and his wife of 66 years, Patricia. When something broke at the church building, it was Gene who fixed it. Gene used his talent at wood crafting to make trivets to sell to benefit missionaries. He taught Sunday school classes, fixed pipes, and used his baritone voice to say incredibly heartfelt prayers.

Patricia was the love of his life, and he told her that often. When his health was failing and he was in the hospital, he made sure Patricia had an anniversary card and a few days later, a birthday present. He called her "my love," and held her hand every time he got a chance. Gene and Patricia were married at 18 years old and held tight to each other for 66 years. His telling of this love story through his simple everyday actions is what his family remembers most; this example of marriage will carry on and influence his children and grandchildren for generations.

Born April 28, 1941, in Seymour, Texas, Gene worked hard on the farm, spending much time with his grandparents. Working odd jobs in his teenage years, Gene was hardworking and dedicated. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy, going overseas in 1960 as a newly-married man. After the births of his two sons, Stan and Brent, Gene began working for Evans Electric Motors. With his eye for detail and his intelligence with all things mechanical and electrical, he was a perfect fit to teach classes to customers on the workings of complex motors and machinery. He retired in 2010 and remained close with his colleagues.

Gene loved retirement. He spent most days in his woodshop making everything from cutting boards and trivets, to desks, chairs, personalized toolboxes, hope chests, et cetera et cetera. He designed them, carefully picked each piece of wood, crafted them and delighted in giving them to his family and friends.

After his passing on May 22, 2026, Gene is survived by his wife, Patricia; son, Brent (and Patrice) Douglas of Edmond, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Patrick Douglas of Edmond, Oklahoma, Phillip Douglas of Edmond, Oklahoma, Seth (and Valerie) Douglas of Phoenix, Arizona, Bonnie (and Russell) Allen of LaGrange, Georgia, Caleb (and Hannah) Douglas of Syracuse, New York, and Caroline (and Mitch) Stephens of Williamston, North Carolina; sister, Donna House of Houston, Texas, and numerous great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, Howard and Mildred Douglas; his son, Stan Douglas; and several of his brothers and sisters.
