Earl "Pete" Sproat, 89, passed away at his home on June 28, 2016 surrounded by family. He was born in Okeene, Oklahoma on August 11, 1926 to Ernest and Lillian "Lillie" Sproat. Pete attended Okeene schools where he lettered in football, basketball and baseball. He left high school in 1944 to enter the U.S. Army and served in the 6th Armored Division. He participated in the campaign for Central Europe, combat leading to the liberation of Buchenwald concentration camp, and the Allied Occupation of Germany. After World War II, Pete returned to Oklahoma and attended Cameron University and Oklahoma A&M College in Okmulgee. He married Maxine Hayslip on February 11, 1950 in Cordell, Oklahoma. Pete worked for several newspapers in western Oklahoma from 1950 to 1961. In 1962, he went to work for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in Oklahoma City and retired from FAA in 1989. During his retirement, he enjoyed woodworking, golf and playing with his grandkids. Pete is survived by his wife, Maxine; son, Scott Sproat and his wife Laura Beebe (Oklahoma City); two grandchildren, Madelyn Sproat and Samuel Sproat (Oklahoma City); and two brothers, Robert Sproat (Snyder) and Ernest Sproat (Enid). He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Virginia Brown (Kingfisher) and brother, Glenn Sproat (Houston). The family would like to thank the staff of Faith Hospice, Encompass Home Health, Integris Cancer Center, and Machelle McGregor for all the care and support they provided Pete. Viewing will be Thursday, 9am-9pm, with family present from 5-7pm at Mercer-Adams. Services will be Friday, July 1, 11:00am at Mercer-Adams Chapel with interment in Bethany Cemetery.
