Earl Peter Madsen
December 27, 1947December 7, 2021
Earl Peter "Pete" Madsen, 73, was born in Sacramento, California to Odetta Jean Frye and Frederick Peter Madsen. Pete grew up in a loving home raised by wonderful family membershis great grandmother, great uncle, and great aunt. These amazing people were the foundational influence for the extraordinary, well-rounded man that Pete becamepatriotic, compassionate, generous, ornery, and humble. He attended Sacramento Senior High School and, at the age of 18, joined the U.S. Air Force. While in the USAF, Pete completed a college degree and earned the rank of Master Sergeant, specializing in computer maintenance and communications.
During his 20-year military career (19681989), Pete lived in a wide variety of locations, including Georgia, New Mexico, Oregon, Mississippi, Thailand, Philippines, and Vietnam. Always joyful, positive, and generous, Pete never knew a stranger. He was always willing to give any of the people he met what they needed to make their journey in this life a little easier while being jubilanta true servant of servants. His infectious smile and incredibly warm demeanor were a magnet that attracted anyone who met him, resulting in deep meaningful friendships wherever he traveled. Oblivious to the inspiration that he provided others, Pete loved engaging in great conversations, supporting his New Orleans Saints football team and participating in a variety of sports. Although he was an avid enthusiast about cars, World War II history, firearms, and aircraft, he still took time to tinker in his barn.
In the spring of 1989, Pete joined the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as an Electronics Instructor in the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City. Throughout his 26-year career with the agency, he enjoyed teaching various courses in navigational communications. While working on a training video, he met a scriptwriter, Laura Shepherd, who would eventually become his bride. They married in 1998, and their love story is one for the ages. They became active in the Bahai faith, enjoyed traveling, spending game nights with friends, jet-skiing at the lake, and staying open to and curious about lifes adventures. Pete loved animals of all kinds and was quite the animal wrangler for neighbors who didnt want to handle snakes, skunks, and the like.
Pete retired from the FAA in 2014 but returned as a contractor with Keybridge Technologies and CSD to fulfill his passion of teaching electronics.
A gentle, kind-spirited soul, Pete epitomized goodness and unity. There is much to be learned from his generous lifenever getting mad, using a harsh word, or complaining. In the words of Bahaullah, "Let deeds, not words, be your adorning." Heaven must be overjoyed that Pete is finally home.
Pete was preceded in death by his mother and father; first wife, Gracie Hardee; and brother-in-law, Daniel Shepherd. Surviving family members include his wife, Laura; sister-in law, Judy Clopp; step-sisters, Aleta Madsen, Tish Fitch and Rozanna Madsen-Picantin, and Simone and Annie; and step-brothers, Fred and Joe Madsen; plus numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
