Darwin E. Waterman was born in Glendale, California to Berness and Emma Waterman. He had one sister, Phyllis Waterman Kiser, who predeceased him. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn, of the home; his son, Steve and wife Marie and their children Isaac, Eric and Emily of Rowlett, TX; and his daughter, Paula and her husband Jeff Duerksen of Oklahoma City. He lived in South Pasadena, CA until joining the Air Force in 1951. He served in Korea until 1952, and when he returned home, he attended California State University at Los Angeles. After he graduated he began his lifelong career in education. He first taught history and coached football in two high schools in Southern California, and some of his students still remember him and write to their favorite teacher, Mr. W. After earning an M.A. from Pasadena College in 1965, he began his career as a school psychologist. He was the county psychologist for San Bernardino County from 1966 until 1972. He traveled the entire county providing psychological services to special education students and their teachers. In 1970, he enrolled at the University of Tulsa to begin work on his doctorate. In 1972, he received a teaching position at University of Central Oklahoma, then Central State College, and he and his family moved to Oklahoma. He received his Ed.D. in 1973, and taught at UCO until 2000. He was devoted to his students and said he wanted each student to be better off after visiting with him and studying with him. He obviously accomplished this, because there are hundreds of teachers, counselors and school psychologists around the state whom he mentored and who are now successes in their fields. Darwin was a proud veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving both in Korea and with the Oklahoma Air National Guard for twenty years. Above all, Darwin loved his family. He and his wife, Carolyn (Lanpher), were married forty nine years this past June. His wife, his children and his grandchildren were his great loves and great sources of pride. He was the consummate family man. In addition to his family, Darwin loved sports, music of all kinds, especially Big Band music, telling funny stories and watching for reactions, traveling and mentoring future teachers and school psychologists. He is a beloved husband, father and grandfather, and his memory will be strong and sweet in his family's hearts, and in the hearts of all those who were blessed by his sparkling blue eyes, sense of humor and joy in life. Graveside service will be Wednesday, July 29, 11:00am in Bethany Cemetery, N.W. 63rd & Rockwell, Bethany, OK.
