Obituary

Dr. Hoyle Caldwell Thomas, H.C. and Tommy, died August 10, 2011 in Yukon, OK. He was born Dec. 24, 1919 in Charlotte, NC, the son of Claude and Annie Belle Hinson Thomas. He was a graduate of Bethany-Peniel College in 1941 with a Bachelors of Theology. He was a member of the Phi Delta Lambda Honor Society. In 1980, he received a Doctorate of Divinity from Northwest Nazarene College. On July 7, 1942, in Blackwell, OK, he married the college queen of Bethany-Peniel College, Juanita Helen Meyers. They moved to Kansas City where he became the pastor of Maple Park Church of the Nazarene. He served 50 full-time years in the ministry, pastoring in Kansas City, Joplin, MO, Greensboro, NC, Mobile, AL, Tulsa, OK, Newton, KS, Ontario, CA, and San Diego, CA. He was selected to be the District Superintendent of the Nebraska District in 1970 followed by the Inter Mountain District in Idaho, from 1977-1988, where he retired from full-time ministry. He held revivals and camp meetings for many years after retirement. He served on three college boards as Trustee; Mid-America Nazarene, Northwest Nazarene, and the Nazarene Bible College. The love of his life was his wife, Juanita. They were married for 60 years. Her passing was in Nov. 2002. Their ministry together in the Nazarene Church was dynamic, touching thousands of lives. Dr. Thomas was known as one of the churchs top preachers. The last sermon he preached was at the age of 90 at Bethany First Church of the Nazarene. He was known for preaching without any notes. He had a brilliant mind, even to his last breath. Besides Juanita, he was preceded in death by his parents, sister Dorothy Helms, and brothers Howard, Thomas and Bud. He is survived by his son, Rudy Thomas and wife Robin of Omaha, NE; daughter, Sue Ann Dean and husband Donnie of Yukon; grandchildren, Donnie Dean II and wife Kari, Jessica Dean, Anna Dean, and Conner Thomas; 5 great-grandchildren, Ryan, David, Tyler, Taylor and Tony; 2 sisters, Alice Henderson and Elsie Griggs, both of Charlotte, NC; sister-in-law, Ruth Thomas; and a host of nieces and nephews. Viewing will be Sunday, 11am-9pm with the family present from 4-6pm at Mercer-Adams, 3925 N. Asbury, Bethany. Services will be Monday, August 15, 2:00pm at Bethany First Church of the Nazarene with interment to follow in Resurrection Cemetery.
