Obituary

Robert Jesse Morgan, M.D., died 9 August 2016. Services will be at Mayflower Congregational Church, 3901 NW 63rd Street, Oklahoma City, at one o'clock on Monday, 15 August 2016. Robert "Bob" Morgan was born 14 Jan. 1919 in Altus, OK, to Emory Mercer Morgan and Gertrude Griswold Parker. In childhood, his family moved to Oklahoma City. An avid athlete and outdoorsman, he played baseball and enjoyed hiking, fishing and horseback riding, especially at his familys cabin in New Mexico. Bob attended Wichita Falls and McAlester grade schools, then Wilson in Oklahoma City, Harding Junior High School, and Classen High School. Bob delivered newspapers for the Oklahoma News. In high school, as a reporter for the Classen Life newspaper, he interviewed junior high students who would attend Classen the following year. One ninth-grade Beauty Queen from Taft Junior High, named Marian Herwig, captured his interest. Bob attended the University of Oklahoma, working the night shift at the Daily Oklahoman. After graduation, Bob entered the OU School of Medicine in September 1941. On 7 Dec. 1941, Bob was working a quiet shift at OPUBCO when word of the bombing of Pearl Harbor came over the wire. Bob and the few others still present were the first in the city to hear, and he alerted the editor and publisher, who had already left for the day, by calling E. K. Gaylord at home. This led to the special Sunday morning edition that informed Oklahoma City of our entrance into World War II. On 29 January 1942, Bob married his sweetheart, Marian, at Pilgrim Congregational Church. Entering Army service, Bobs official orders were to finish his medical training which included rotating internships in Dallas, a 1-year residency in Internal Medicine at University Hospital in Oklahoma City, a 2-year residency at OU, and a 1-year Dermatology residency at Columbia School of Medicine in New York. Upon graduation in 1945, he was stationed in Alaska Territory as a base physician, where he received broad experience in various medical fields including internal medicine, dermatology, syphilology, and psychiatry. Bob established a practice in dermatology, maintaining an office in Oklahoma City from 1951 until his retirement in 1994. Bob began teaching at OU Medical School in 1951, attaining positions as Clinical Professor of Dermatology and Assistant Director of the Dermatology Department. In addition to other titles and positions, he served as President of Oklahoma State Dermatology, on the Board of Directors of Oklahoma County Medical Society, and Vice President of the American Dermatological Association. In 1982, he received the Clark W. Finnerud Award for simultaneous teaching and clinical practice of dermatology from the Dermatology Foundation. Bob was an active, lifelong member of Pilgrim and Mayflower Congregational Churches. He attended Oklahoma City Downtown Rotary meetings regularly since 1951. He held season tickets to OU Football for 63 years, and played weekly golf as a member of Twin Hills Country Club until he was in his mid 80s. A gentlemanly and unfailingly curious man, Bob also possessed a dry sense of humor and a mischievous streak. Dr. Robert J. Morgan was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Della Gail Shelley and Dorothy Alice Wood, paternal grandparents, Alice Jessie Williams and the Rev. Robert Jesse Morgan, State Representative for Jackson County, and maternal grandparents, Carrie Adella Griswold and the Reverend Joseph Homer Parker, who founded Kingfisher College, now a part of the University of Oklahoma. Bob leaves behind his loving wife of 74 years, Marian Elizabeth Herwig Morgan, and four sons and daughters-in-law: Douglas H. Morgan & wife Janice A. (Brown) of Warr Acres, OK; David P. Morgan & wife Anita L. (Kirkland) of Buda, Texas; Peter R. Morgan & wife Sally J. (Peterson) of Edmond, OK; and Daniel M. Morgan & wife Lisa M. Alonge of Centennial, CO.
