On the Saturday night of August 15, 2020, Dr. Jerald "Jerry" Gilbert of Bethany, Oklahoma was welcomed into the arms of Christ at Mercy Hospital at the age of 77.
The funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 20, at 2:00 P.M. at the Mercer-Adams Funeral Home Chapel. After the service, Jerry will be interred alongside his parents at the Resurrection Cemetery.
Jerry and his twin brother James ("Jim") were born on August 1, 1943 to Leon Nelson Jr. and Geraldine Ella (Shobert) Gilbert at Fort Sill, near Lawton, OK. His family briefly lived in the small town of Honey Grove, TX but moved to Bethany, OK in 1953 which served as Jerrys hometown. In 1962, Jerry graduated from Bethany High School. By 1971, he received his dental degree from the University of Baylor College of Dentistry, but later decided to follow in his fathers footsteps and attained his medical degree in 1975 from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine.
Jerry moved back to his hometown of Bethany in 1978 and practiced medicine alongside his father and twin brother at the Gilbert Medical Center. In the 1980s, it was here that Jerry met Melissa Burr, whom he married on December 20, 1991. By 1996, he left the Gilbert Medical Center to move to Ada, OK, where he had the opportunity to help the Chickasaw Nation establish their family practice clinic. He worked for them until he retired in the Summer of 2019.
Apart from being a well-renown medical practitioner who had a passion for medicine and helping his patients, Jerry was also an accomplished athlete. In 1962, he broke the Bethany High School record for the 220-yard dash with a time of 22.5 seconds - a record that was held for several decades. By the time he entered college, he managed to fulfill his childhood dream of playing football for the University of Oklahoma. Even after his college days were over, Jerry still retained his passion for OU football all throughout his life.
Besides watching OU football, Jerry also enjoyed western movies and various judge shows. Those who knew him were often entertained by his quick wit and felt welcomed by his kind heart. Although he was passionate about practicing medicine, there was nothing more important to him then spending time with his wife and kids.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Geraldine Gilbert.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Melissa; his twin brother, Jim, and Jims wife, Vickie Gilbert; his daughter, Brooke and her husband, Dave Zacheis; his son, Vince and his wife, Michele Gilbert; his son, Chris Gilbert and his fiance, Christa Ensey; his daughter, Belle Gilbert; and his daughter, Ashley Gilbert; 6 grandchildren; as well as 8 nephews and 3 nieces.
