Obituary

Dr. H.C. Emmert of Bethany, Oklahoma went to be with Jesus on December 1, 2013. Henry Clay Emmert was born December 3, 1921 to Rev. Joseph and Lela Emmert of Wheeler County, Texas, as the fourth son of seven children. He was called H.C. as he grew up in Nazarene parsonages in Mangum and Grandfield, Oklahoma. As a boy, H.C. learned to chop and pick cotton, deliver newspapers and later worked at the local drug store. While in Grandfield, he met his heart's treasure, Alva June Wilson of the local church. At age 15, H.C.'s family moved to Orange, Texas, a great distance from his sweetheart in Grandfield. Three years later, on a return visit to Grandfield, H.C. and June were married on May 30, 1939 and then departed for Orange, Texas to start their lives together. H.C. was called to preach while working in the ship yards in Orange and, at the risk of being drafted, he prayerfully entered the ministry with the Church of the Nazarene in 1943. His ministry continued for over seventy years with ten churches in five states while also teaching Bible and Theology in four Holiness Bible Colleges. Dr. Emmert founded the local Calvary Bible Fellowship Church in 1979 and also served as International Coordinator for the International Association of Bible Fellowship Missions for sixteen years. Dr. Emmert earned his BA and Master's degrees from Bethany Nazarene College and later his Doctorate from Luther Rice Seminary with graduate work at Oklahoma University and two other Seminaries. His writings and teachings are currently being used in several Bible College Curriculums and are being translated into Spanish. Preceding Dr. Emmert in death were his parents, Rev. Joseph and Lela Emmert; brothers, Edward Emmert, Harold Emmert, and Dr. J. Louis Emmert; and sister, Ruth Pickens. Dr. Emmert is survived by Mrs. June Emmert of the home; four children, Margaret Clark and husband Dan, Linda Skodak of the home, Clay Emmert and wife Linda, Judy Mansfield and husband Larry; sister, Allie Eppler; brother, Sam Emmert and wife Kathy; brothers-in-law, Rev. O.W. Wilson and wife Bessie, Don Wilson and wife Linda; grandchildren, D'Arbara Self and husband Richard, Robby Stiffler, Angelia Duffy and husband Brian, T.J. Dr. Emmert was a loving husband and father, a treasured friend, a man of humor and wit with a touch of orneriness. He was admired for his resilient spirit, clear vision and his compassionate counsel. He was an industrious and resourceful man who embraced the many challenges of pastoring, building and improving churches and properties. He spent many summers in charge of dozens of church camp dining halls in Oklahoma and Tennessee. He enjoyed pursuing his higher education, gardening, home improvement, raising cattle and had business ventures in real estate, stock trailer sales and rental properties. To know Dr. H.C. Emmert was to admire his resolve, love his spirit and respect his character. Dr. Emmert's spiritual life span has been a testament to his love of God and his burning desire to live in the center of God's will while spreading the Gospel of Christ. His cornerstone and favorite Bible verse was Romans 31:8. He was a shepherd, a leader and teacher who lived by example of deep holiness conviction. Dr. Emmert's unwavering faith and heavy reliance on intercessory prayer made him an inspiration to all who knew him. With his eternal healing now complete, we can imagine that he has already walked the streets of gold shouting, "Glory, Glory, Glory, Praise Be to God Forever and Forever."
