David Allen Ellis, 92, passed away March 5, 2010, after a long life of faithful service to God. Missionary kid, chemist, WW II veteran, faithful layman, and professor, Dr. Ellis was born March 25, 1917 in Seattle, Washington to Frank A. N. Ellis and Margaret Ann Nimmons Ellis. He spent his childhood in China where his parents were missionaries during the turbulent years before the Communist occupation. He attended Northwest Nazarene College (Idaho), transferring to the University of Washington where he graduated in 1939 with a MS in chemistry. After working in the weather bureau in Alaska, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps where he worked in weather intelligence in India during the war. He married Dorothy Tolle of Los Angeles in 1943. He earned a PhD in Chemistry in 1949 from the USC and worked as a research chemist for Dow Chemical in Pittsburg, CA. After early retirement from Dow, he became a professor of chemistry at Azusa Pacific College in California. David and Dorothy moved to Oklahoma City in 1991. Dorothy preceded him in death in 1995. He is survived by a daughter Margaret (Peggy) Poteet, son-in-law Jim Poteet, sister-in-law Mary Ann Ellis, and grandsons Joshua and Brandon. Services will be held Monday, March 8 at 2:00 pm in Mercer-Adams Chapel with visitation Sunday, March 7 from 2-4 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Dorothy Ellis Memorial English Scholarship at Southern Nazarene University.
