Obituary

Carl B. Summer, our amazing Dad, Pa, and husband to Judy passed into the arms of Jesus on October 18, 2024, in Bethany, OK. He was a minister in the Church of the Nazarene for 53 years. He was born in Freer, TX to James Hall and Mary Virginia (McAllister) Summer on Oct.15, 1936.

Dr. Summer graduated from Freer High School, having served as the Student Body President and a member of the football team. He loved their football team reunions. He earned a Doctor of Ministry from Fuller Theological Seminary, a Masters in Religion, a B.Th. and A.B. from Bethany Nazarene College (now Southern Nazarene University). He received numerous awards and honors.

He pastored Central Church of the Nazarene, Lawton First Church of the Nazarene, Calvary Church of the Nazarene, and the Santa Cruz Church of the Nazarene in Trinidad-Tobago. He was elected District Superintendent of the SW Oklahoma District in September 1985. He taught as an adjunct professor at Point Loma Nazarene University, Trevecca Nazarene College, and Caribbean Nazarene College. He was instrumental in organizing the Love Links Compassionate Ministry, Reaching Our City, setting up the OU Student Center and purchasing land for the Salyer Lake Camp and Conference Center.

Dr. Summer's life goals, in his own words, were "How to Help People Fall in Love with God, Stay in Love with God, and Walk in God's Love toward Others. First and foremost, what it means to live in the Daily, Dynamic Covenant with Jesus as the Continuing, Compelling, Captivating First Love of Our Hearts and Lives!" As he would say, "That'll preach."

Carl loved God, loved his wife Barbara, his second wife Judy, and our family; he loved all people and loved the church with his whole heart. He served his entire adult life with a passionate drive for all people to know the love that Jesus has for them and for them to know what it means to have a personal, intimate relationship with our loving Heavenly Father.

Carl is survived by his wife, Judy (Browning) Summer; two daughters, Cheryl Rains (Ralph) and Renae Fowler (Terry); six grandchildren, Michael Rains (Kerri), Matthew Rains (Lee Harris), Mark Rains (Bethany), Ashlee Jacoby, Chris Waldrop (Emily) and Sky Viera (Josiah); eight great-grandchildren, and his sister, Margaret Clinton. He was proceeded in death by his wife, Barbara (Miller) Summer, his parents, James and Mary Summer, his brother, James Summer, Jr, and his sister, Mary Lee Edmiston.

In lieu of flowers and to perpetuate Carl Summer's passionate desire for people to know Jesus, the family suggests honoring his memory with donations to help children and teens attend church camp. Please make donations to The Fellowship at Western Oaks stating "Church Camp Donation" in memory of Carl Summer and mail to 7901 NW 16th St., Oklahoma City, OK 73127.
